Fall Ball injury - Ouch!

Had a very scary moment yesterday. Daughter playing in a fall ball league bunts down 1st base line, frist baseman picks up the ball and tags dd as she is running by. Not her fault, but throws stride of dd off a little and as she comes down on first base a little sideways comes down on it wrong.

Dd immediately falls to the ground and starts screaming, holding her ankle...still hear her scream...we get her carried off and to the ER, it doens't look like anything is broken in the initial X-ray, follow-up this Friday with Ortho doctor...

I send a shout out to Edge00, (I think) who described his daughter breaking her ankle and the exact same thing following his dd sliding into second...now I can truly relate. She's done with fallball this year (hoping she is ok for basketball tryouts).

When I first saw Safety bases several years back - I thought they were silly.......

Now I can not understand how Organizers can go without having them.
While the Safety base may not have had a factor in ths situation - I know of a girl who s not playing fall ball due to a collision at 1st in July & a resulting broken leg. Have seen way too many close calls for injury.

The bad part is when many places have them - Girls get use to taking up more of the base while covering the bag. So when they are not there - it gives less room to the runner. While they should be taught how to play the postion corectly, it ends up causing more problems by getting use to them, then not having them.

Very easy to have them everywhere.......The cost of one safety base sure outweighs the cost of an injured DD!!!!!!!!

WOW! Scary indeed... hope she's OK. Just shows that anything can happen at any time. DD had a "freak" accident her junior year of HS that put her out of comission for nearly the entire season.

I agree that a "safety bag" probably would not have made any difference either way in this situation - which I'll throw in my 2 cents worth on:

The whole reason of a safety bag is to attempt to avoid collisions at first base - nearly always caused by a first baseman not being taught how to cover the bag, and how to handle coverage at her position. The "split bag" is meant to keep the runner in her lane (orange bag - foul territory) and the fielder in fair territory (white bag - fair territory). Unfortunately, the mechanics are usually never explained clearly to young kids, and they still get in each other's way.

The "big girls" play on an unaltered field, which hopefully all young girls eventually will. By teaching a different, altered method of base running to young kids, you create a situation where they have to be re-taught the proper way when they get older. Why not just clearly teach the concept of baserunning from an early age WITHOUT using the orange bag, and eliminate the need of remedial teaching later? When my DD was playing travel, her coaches used to hate to see a tournament using the orange bags. His girls WERE taught properly, and the orange bags usually created more confusion than anything - and with confusion comes an eventual collision.

The orange bags are completely different than say, helmet masks, fielder's masks, etc. The orange bag has been around far longer than the mandatory facemasks. If they were so effective at preventing injury, why are they not instituted at all levels of the game?

Fall Ball injuries- DD had a pitch hit her knee cap as she stepped thru on a slap. Sounded like a ball hitting a bat. Were sitting here today after going to Doc and having X rays, Doc called and says the knee cap isn't broken, but could need some Sports therapy. Will see how things go, but we think its just a deep bruise. You never know when a injury will happen-funny thing is we were talking on the way to game and DD told me that you can't things for granted.

Worst part was she had played her 2 games, no problem, gonna leave and watch the Cowboys play...a team no-shows and they ask if there are any girls that want to play. She says yeah, away we go...sounds like I should be glad I did not watch Dallas go 0-2, bad thing 4 hours in the ER at Mercy in Harrison (Great staff there btw!)

The 1st baseman was straddling the linewhen she picked the ball up, I don't think a safety bag, or even an orange safety bag would have made much of a difference.

Thanks Sammy for the thoughts, she is playing hooky today probably burning up Facebook!

I hate to see a child go down. Best of luck. Let's hope for a speedy recovery.

This past Sunday, DD first at bat, lays down a drag bunt. On a bang bang play at first, the 1st baseman's hip collides with my DD's leg. It was a sight to see, 95lb speedy slapper running into (putting it nicely) solid first baseman. I think when my daughter finally landed she was about 10' past first. Lol. I'm just glad she had the awareness to take 2nd base on the overthrow. :).

I agree wholeheartedly about fielders being taught proper form at the bases, but I have never seen an instance when a safety bag created a problem. There is a lot occuring on plays like that, often times it only takes one slip up and things can go very wrong. The game is always evolving ........safety bags should be installed. No questions asked. JMHO.

Regrets on the injuries to your DD's. I can certainly relate, a couple of years ago DD is pitching and one is hit right back to her, hits her in the pelvic/crotch area. DD goes down screaming and crying. I run out to field and try to calm her down because I don't know what else to do. Eventually she gets up, doesn?t play for the rest of the day. She ended up being okay but what a scary moment. I always pray for her safety above anything else before each game. It?s part of playing sports but I just hate to see these girls get hurt.

Thanks to all for the thoughts and prayers. I got home last night and she was able to put a little bit of weight on it, still not bending it back, but definitely an improvement.

Kavin- she's doing a lot better. She worked out tonight for a little over an hour hitting/running and it held up. It looks like she will be ok for the W.E. Will see you Friday night.
