Valley Extreme has a great fall tournament at Candlelight Knolls in Courtland, near Youngstown. :)

Valley Extreme probably has one of the best fall leagues around. They usually have a solid core of travel teams that participate.

OUr orgaization think it's beneficial for grade school players, but don't recommend it for high school players. in our area there are two leagues a sunday league with FAST and saturday evening Premier Team only league with SGS see www.sgsfastpitch.org

fall leagues are like that Halloween candy you're dying to eat but you know once you start you're getting one doozy of a belly-ache. i learned the hard way, because bad habits are harder to erase than keeping good ones, which she can work on at home with a tee...look, in a game, how many pitches do you see per at bat? maybe 2-3? i'd take a couple of hundred swings off a tee in the basement over sub-par, JV pitchers any day (unless your DD is 10, 11 playing in a 14u league or something)..,.proceed with caution

play spano, ft. wayne tourneys in winter...maybe a team camp would do wonders

I could go on and on about this topic. Many good points have been made, but the best one is that skills are not developed in fall leagues, they are developed by practicing. With the exception of college showcases, skip the fall league, enjoy your other sports, work out hard and schedule scrimmages for some competition.

There is another way to look at it and this is what finally changed my mind (we played fall ball for several years). Make a list or evaluation of the kind of team you want to be. Then make a list of the teams you feel best represent what you want to be. Then check the list of teams playing fall ball - you probably won't find the teams that are playing fall ball on your list.

I am not criticizing anyone playing fall ball. Fall ball can be a lot of fun and there is nothing wrong with that. However, it is not likely to build your skills, especially if all you are doing is playing the games and not practicing at all.

I have fall tournaments as it seems that not many do. I have a Fall State and Jacket tournament in September ( NAFA) and the popular uniform tournament in Ocotber where teams play a three game round robin in a one day tournament (4 teams in each age division) with the winner's taking home $600.00 dollars worth of uniforms. Past winners Miami Valley Express, Phoenix (they sent me a nice picture of the girls in their new uniform this Spring), Ohio Heat's Blast $450.00 dollar award (three teams only last year)... I got more out of state teams, Kentucky and West Virginia and a New York team e-mailed this morning wanting in. Check out the NAFA Tournament section.

depends on the age of the girls in the fall league a lot of times you'l have older teams playing younger teams and obviously not as helpful as the younger kids playing up!

I just think that some fall leagues start out well... then fall off and I have watched leagues that towards the end of the league... teams quit showing up, etc.... while the toher team is there looking to play. The amount of money spent by teams to be at fall leagues each and every week.... well to me could be spent on tournaments to sharpen up the competitive skills, win prizes and berths.

Just my opinion.

What I see happen in Fall Leagues is teams are not always made up of all travel ball players. Many leagues have a set-up where teams have a combination of all levels of players. Then there are leagues that are made up of travel teams only. I think that we can not lump them all together.

My own perosnal experience with the players that I coach (now 14U) has been that when they were younger 10U thru 12U the better players would play fall League (especially playing up) just to get some more reps in. At that age they were interested but this last year coming off a very solid 2008 travel schedule they had zero interest in playing fall ball of any level. They simply wanted some time off. We also encourged them to get away from the game for awhile and in fact we did no softball related activities at all (exept for tryouts) for almost a month. Players and parents alike really appreciated that and then we looked at playing a fall tournament or two and maybe a few scrimmages with the 2009 team.

I am not sure how common this is but I se nothing unique about us so maybe it is normal. Just my two cents worth.

After playing fall ball think we would have been better off practicing and playing 2 tournements instead of fall ball and 1 tourney. We would have been farther ahead.

No benefit from fall ball that I have ever found. Reps? Reps against great players? These players playing fall ball? Most likely not. Let the girls go be kids. Well, it is winter so what's next.

"Well, it is winter so what's next."

Working indoors to build and sharpen skills. Then its looking forward to high school fastpitch, and then on with the travel season. Spring will get here soon enough but in the mean time there is plenty of work to be done.
