"Gold" in the name, what does it really mean?

There was an off-topic discussion on another thread (closed because it was off-topic) that essentially was debating What the word GOLD meant when attached to a team name. I always just assumed that unless it was attached to an 18U team, at which time I would look at their schedule, that it was simply a means of differentiating the team from another in the organization. For an 18U team I would look at the schedule to see whether it was a team truly playing ASA 18U Gold or a just a differentiation.

So, to the question does having Gold in the team name and not playing an ASA Gold schedule constitute false advertising?

Well, our team colors are blue and yellow, but our organization has always used Blue and Gold as team designations.

My vote is for trivial BS, but what else do have to talk about?:yahoo:

I think, in regards to 18U, and maybe 16U, designating a team Gold indicates to outsiders that it is indeed a Gold-level team.

Our colors are black and gold so for us it is just a color to seperate teams.

Maybe ASA should use the designations "A" and "B" instead of colors? Just my 2cents, anyway.

If a team is "playing gold" it simply means that the coach thinks they are good enough to have a better than average shot at qualifying for 18gold nationals. The only reason I can think of to put it in the team name would be to distinguish between the other teams in the organizations. You might have - buttkickers 16U, buttkickers 18U, & buttkickers 18Gold in the same tournament.

I coach an 18u team for Fast Wizards and our name is Wizards Jones/Gold I think it is because there are two teams and they can tell the differance between them(so many Wizard teams out there...lol) I never really thought people would consider anything differant...plus I agree with softballcat12 it sounds enticing and cooler...jmo

This is what I was also thinking. I'm not sure in Ohio it makes much of a difference with practically nobody playing Gold. But in the West, if you are an 18-U team and attach Gold to the end of your name, you had better be playing Gold.

Joe good answer that responce probably sums it up the best. I also get if there are two teams in an orginization at the same age and one is your better team I get why someone would slap the Gold name on it. But back to the previous thread and the team in question it just seemed some what hokie! that they would use Gold.

Some teams play Gold and do not have Gold in their name. Indy Dreams and Team Mizuno are a couple that I know of.

If attaching Gold to the end of your team name makes you better then next year I'm bypassing Platinum and going straight to Rhodium.
