I have a player on my team that is a freshman and is currently playing volleyball for school........she was told she could not practice or play with her travel softball team while she was playing volleyball or any other High School sport........I know this is not true......but what is the rule according to OHSAA?

'Sounds like it's the coaches rule.

OHSAA has no concerns with HS VB vs. "non scholastic" softball.

I believe OHSAA only has a rule that they can't play the same sport while playing a high school sport. Example if she playes high school volleyball she can't play volleyball with a travel team at the same time. Same for other sports. I know that starting Feb 21 (I believe is the date this year) my daughter will no longer be able to practice with her travel softball team if she play's high school softball. This is until the high school's season is over.

6.3) Participating in Non-Interscholastic Programs ? Team Sports ? A member of an interscholastic
squad sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board in a
team sport (Baseball, Basketball, Field Hockey, Football, Ice Hockey, ******, Softball and
Volleyball) shall not participate in an athletic contest, tryouts or any type of team or group
training or practices on a non-interscholastic squad in a team sport in the same sport during
the school?s interscholastic sports season. This regulation is applicable for those invited to
participate in a tryout, group training or practices at a college or in contests, tryouts, group
training or practices with any non-school team such as a club.

As Gopher said, "Who wants to test it?".

When my daughter was still in High School, her travel team practiced an hour away. So we made sure we kept our mouths shut, and practiced all winter long.

(I'm sure the HS coach has the policy to attempt to avoid injuries or fatigue on his/her team...)

I agree, Coach's rule. But do you really want to test it ?

Everyone wants to jump down OHSAA all the time for their rules, which have some reasoning behind them - right or wrong.
Yet, everyone should listen to a single coach who is on a "Power Trip"???? These are OUR kids, if we want to have them practice another sport, or act in a play, who is he to tell something lke that???????

According to OHSAA rules, you are allowed to participate with Select team up till first contest or scrimmage. Whivh wouldn't be till mid March for almost all!!!
Again, you have a HS softball coach tell you he doesn't want your DD get 2 hours a week for an additional 3 weeks of softball work cause why????? Afraid you will trip over a tee, have a pitching machine go wild & cause injury???? Cause they too are on a Power trip!!!

If half your HS team played Select volleyball in spring & coach made that rule - wonder what he would do if all walked? They do it cause they feel they can! BS

We had a similar situation this summer. VB coach told the girls that "open gyms" were mandatory if they expected to play varsity. Our SB coach was trying to utilize his 10 contact days but was missing several girls due to this mandate from the VB coach. I think sometimes HS coaches get into power struggles with each other over the same core girls that chose to play multiple sports. Only hurting the girls because in some smaller schools you may end up having the girls choose one or the other and then not enough for both teams. Then who wins ?

If I were coaching those girls in TB, power trip or not, I would want them to follow their school coach's rules. Why get them punished over a few hitting lessons? I have them for nearly the entire year so if they have to take a few months of to ensure they get to play for their high school, then so be it. HS ball usually is full of politics anyway so why rock the boat any more than it is already being rocked? It puts the girls in a bad position of choosing one over the other and I wouldn't want my girls to have to do that.....I wouldn't want to see them sitting all HS season because I insisted they practice with us. Just sayin'.

Let the kid do what she wants and as long as she accepts the consequences that may come, it's still her choice. I had one of ours with a school sanctioned Powder Puff game with her ****** coach, that she stood up to him, said heck with you, did it, suffered his wrath, but set the stage for future years now he allows the Seniors to do it...

They are our kids and nobody owns them!

How do you figure you have them all year????
August thru October is Volleyball & the kicking ball game for school, Nov. thru till March is basketball......Can't have during March, April, May due to school ball........

So if everyone listens to all the various school coaches - You get them for June & July!!!! And if the various HS coaches want their summer contact days - Well, then there is NO room for Select softball anymore............So do we all listen to the power trips & just do away with all this?????

I think lots of high school coaches are totally against all JO/AAU/Select sports no matter what........
That is why a HS softball coach makes a big deal about a player getting in an extra couple of workouts with thier Select team in early March when OHSAA says they still could.

Wonder if volleyball coach is against that same girl who is on the school softball or track team playing some type of JO volleyball in the Spring???

To me this entire issue is, the coach has set team rules. You as a Parent must support the Coach and the team rules. I read
recently where a Varsity coach suspended 15 of 17 Varsity players for violating a curfew law. The team played two matches
with their JV team, losing both and dropping from state rankings. The parents of the suspended players were not angry, but
supportive of the lesson the players learned. If your HS softball coach were to do this, would you support them?

I have them all year because I have them from August until August....except I lose 2 for a couple months in the spring when they play high school ball. I have a few who play other school sports but it doesn't interfere with our practices or games.

Its a team rule and a pretty common rule. Vball most likely is 6 days a week, does she really need to attend sept/oct Sball practice? It's really not a big deal, people just don't like to be told what they can or can't do. I say take the pressure off the kid and tell her you'll see her at the end of the Vball season.
