High School letters

Is there a standard for lettering in high school softball or is it up to the School/Coach? We had a boy play a few innings in 2 games and he lettered but had girls who played more innings and didn't. It seems there should be a standard to go by.

Our Athletic Handbook has general guidelines to use for determining who earns an Athletic letter, but coaches do not have to abide by this and normally have their own guidelines.

Our H.S. Athletic book is the same for Baseball and Softball. Must play in at least 7 varsity innings. But I know in the other B-ball, exceptions have been made to suit the coach even though the handbook states play in 1/4 the varsity quarters.

Our coaches decide on the requirements but I believe that the AD has input.

Our school's baseball team gives letters to their female student scorekeepers and to their bullpen catcher although neither see any playing time at all. The softball student scorekeepers (when they have them) do not get letters.

Back when I played h.s. softball, our coach required that you had to play half of the innings for the season or win a league game as a pitcher. Needless to say, it was easier for me as a freshman pitcher to letter than it would have been as a position player where I mostly sat and watched. (We didn't have a J.V. back then)

Also up to the coach at Liberty Union. Fair or not, totally up to the coach. Enjoy it while you can. As I am learning, time is short with your DD :'(. Then they are onto the next level which we actually hear little about. Other then parents staying in contact with their colleges. There might be a blip or report here and there but news is mostly to the parents on how they are doing. Guess it's time to get ESPN or sign up for the live stream offered by the college!! Thankfully, I have a a younger kid to stay up to the minute with.

I give a letter to anyone who spent the entire season on varsity, or to a girl who was called up to varsity and played at least 25% of the innings or in 50% of the games. So could a girl get 5 at-bats all season and get a letter? Yes. A girl could also get called to varsity and pinch-run once a game and get a letter. That's lenient, but I don't care. It's one more thing that will no longer be a distraction from the business of concentrating on playing the game on the field.

Can your boosters help by organizing a meeting with all of the athletic teams and AD? Bringing attention to other schools requirements may help to standardized how to earn a letter in your school.

If the AD wants to set a standard, fine, although it would necessarily have to differ by sport. If the boosters want to talk to the AD about the AD setting a standard, also fine. But the boosters aren't about to set a standard themselves and try to foist it upon the coaches. In other words, it's not a negotiation.

Leave softball decisions to the coaches and fundraising matters to the boosters.

Our High school had 16 girls on varsity because we had no JV . 9 or 10 of them started every game and played 99% of the time but they gave all 16 girls there varsity letter . I thought you had to play so many innings but thats not the case up here.

Ours is left up to the coaches. In my mind, any girl who has been on the varsity all year ... practicing and attending all of the games should get a letter regardless of how much the coach plays them. Call-ups is where it gets tricky in my mind ... I could see something like Joe's policy where if a girl got called up something like 50% of the time or more, she would get a letter, again whether she played or not.
