High School Stats

I chuckle when I hear anyone discussing high school stats. Like it or not, HS stats are 33% popularity contest, 33% self-promotion, 33% earned, and 1% BS. Fortunately, as Tim said, all that nonsense goes away in college ball. You get what you earn, and you earn what you get - period. Hmmm... kinda sounds like REAL life.

When you give a hit for an error, the pitcher suffers. When you give a RBI on a passed ball the pitcher suffers. When you give an PO to the catcher on a dropped third strike the pitcher suffers........

The stats can be a perfect system of checks and balance. When used right they can help the individual players and the entire team improve. When you cheat on the stats someone will suffer. It is a zero sum game. Write down what happens and let the devil take the hind-most and the universe will be in perfect serenity.

Fairman ... not following what you're saying exactly ... pitchers aren't impacted one way or the other if there's an RBI on a play, or are they impacted if a catcher drops a 3rd strike (as long as they still get the out at first). Do agree with you though that consistent and well-kept stats are a useful tool for the coach and team.

I know you didn't ask me, but I definitely agree that accurate stats are a useful tool for the coach and team. At any level I've coached I've kept a book in our dugout and I make the hit-error calls. I then update our stats on TurboStats each night after games. I might or might not share the stats with the team, but I rely on them and use them. In college, my stats and the official stats are usually very similar, but there are sometimes significant differences. Our SID does a good job and is interested in accurate stats. In fact, most SIDs are the same. It is when the SID can't be at a game when things often go awry. Usually it's a student worker who might have received some basic training in scorekeeping and all bets are off.

For your entertainment read what the local paper has on a high school team. Now google the team that they were playing in their local paper. Now but them side by side and have a good chuckle. You will see how bad it is. I'm sure glad our travel team keeps accurate stats, of course Joe wouldn't have had it any other way when he was in charge of the Heat.

A ground ball out is a SAC if a runner advances... no bunt or half-swing lol.

I heard a dad tell that to another dad a few days ago. Needless to say it made dad #2's day.

Let's not forget the Fielders Choice, those are always scored a hit.

Had this five times in one game on Saturday. The other team's SID was at a national event, so scoring was left to a student. Fortunately, other team's coach understands and we'll be fixing this issue, along with others, either today or tomorrow.

This really ticks me!! I have read all of this, and dang it why is it this way!! I scored the high school games for the past two years, and this year the coach has someone else doing it. I still keep my own book, and frankly, the girls on that team EARN every hit, EARN every RBI!! The person scoring now, scores like this post is depicting!!! My dd is a junior in high school and I want the stats to be correct!! She would like to play in college and, to me, and her it is important!! I have brought it to the coaches attention and NOTHING has changed!! How does this get fixed?

I would think that most college coaches are aware of the vast differences in the skill levels of all high school scorekeepers.

My DDs player profile just has her travel team stats - she didn't actually get any high school stats last year due to a welcome disruption in our coach's life! :) However, I think colleges expect to see travel team stats, not HS stats.

Travel team stats are more important than highschool stats. There are way to many highschools that do not know how to keep stats. A lot of the head coaches for highschool do not know how to keep them, so you know their score keepers don't.
