"4) Non-Interscholastic Participation
4.1) A member of an interscholastic fast pitch softball squad (any student who has played
in a scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or
starter) sponsored by the Board of Education shall not participate in a non-interscholastic
program (tryouts, practice or contest) as an individual or as a member of
a team in the sport of fast pitch softball during the school?s season (Bylaw 10-3-1)."

From the OHSAA Softball Regs: http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/rglts/SB05-06.pdf

The only iffy question that you ask relates to open gyms, but since that's a term that is usually associated with high school open gyms, I wouldn't take the risk of participating with what is essentially a travel team practice under the rubric of "open gym".

All of this answer assumes that when you are referring to a "high school freshman" that young lady is playing on either a varsity, JV, or freshman team sponsored by the H.S.

RULE 10. OHSAA RULES ? ?(Participation on Non-School Teams) You may not try out, practice, or participate in any way with a Non-school team while a member of a school team in the same sport. Some people try to bend the rules a little, but if caught the OHSAA will for sure Enforce the rules. A girl from our area was stopped by an OHSAA director in FLORIDA of all places and was out for the whole following season also.

This has probably been covered twice a year in detail, for the past tens years, but ....

Daughter makes a travel team in fall try-outs, plays fall ball, practices (maybe even plays in dome) throughout the winter, drops travel associations once HS ball starts, resumes summer travel activities after HS season - that is okay right?

If this timeline is not okay, then, what is the "formula" that the serious year round fastpitch players use for balancing both their travel affiliations and high school ball. I can see conflicts between winter dome ball (with your travel team) and the onset of high school preseason conditioning and team building sessions potentially, as well, from the sounds of things??

Since "indoor ball" is not considered softball by the OHSAA, playing it during the season shouldn't be a violation (HS Coach may not like it); the way I read it though, practicing indoors IS a violation once the girl meets the definition of being a member of a HS team.

The high school season is so short you won't miss that much of the travel ball season here in Ohio. ? If your daughter wants to tryout for a team have the travel coach come to a couple of hs games, ? he'll probably get a better look than the typical tryout anyway. ? ?It is hard to play hs and travel at the same time since hs is 6 days a week already.

OHSAA Does not recognize "indoor softball" as softball. At least not now. Any High school player can play "indoors" as long as her H.S. coach does not have a problem with it.

softballsfun reference to a high school girl pitching sunday was towards my team the 14u Ohio Lightning. I received a private message accusing me of using high school players. I cant believe people get so worked up about 50 minute scrimmage games but to settle the matter i offer this. The girl in question is in the 8th grade at St Barnibas (not sure of spelling) pitches for us year round but was not at our games 2 weeks ago when we played the team she pitched against Sunday. This girl pitched for the 12u Sapphires the last 2 yrs. now I hope all questions are answered. Hope there is no sour grapes here over a ?scrimmage game. That would be kind of childish . ;) Tom Boyle
PS I can understand why people may question her age its because she is such a talent. A great girl from a great family who the Lightning are blessed to have .

Lightning Coach.... We you the Ohio Lightning team at the Spano Dome back in Feb? The 14U Tourney. If so , great group of girls you have there. They played Fastpitch with my 5 year old for about a half hour. She pitched and played catcher, and they worked with her some lol, Nice Kids!

We were the Lady Irish 13U team down there.
