My daughter has just experienced her first try-out. She is a very solid player. How do you stand out in the sea of others if you are not a flame thrower? She is quick and hustles, but with right coaching could really shine. She was asked to come back to another try-out, but had a conflict. Looking for some pointers.

Cream rises to the top.. Continue to look for other try-outs and go to the 2nd try out. The coach still has questions about the player. If you have a conflict ask for a private try-out. If the coach declines the private try-out move on. No matter what continue looking and working hard it will work out

It's hard for a coach to get a good read on a player in the short amount of time they see them at tryouts. If you really want your player to stand out among the crowd, schedule a private tryout. It gives the girl more time to shine and the coach a longer, more thourough look at the player. Most coaches have no problem setting up a private tryout for any player who wants one.

When I coached a 9u team, I had no assistants and didn't know any of the kids, I had a lot of help in the evaluation area but I made it a point to talk to each kid, I think at that age coachability is the #1 thing I was looking for. It became evident who would be engaged in the coach/Player relationship and who wouldn't.

How do you stand out? Hustle. Hustle. Hustle. Be open to criticism. Follow directions. And don't throw a mini fit when you strike out or muff a grounder hit to you. Those actions alone will eliminate 2/3 of your competition.

I am in the same situation this year with a 9u. A comment that I have heard is I like her but I already have 3 9 year old players. The coaches daughter is 10 and trying to get as many 10s as he can so they can stay together. I understand this theory, but makes it difficult when there are no 9u teams in my area.
