Individual skills lessons

I'm sure this has been on this site MANY times but I just want an update to insure what the rule is.

We here in NE Ohio are lucky enough to have one of the best (if not the very best) softball hitters ever. As most of this forum knows Crystl Bustos is now giving skill lessons. My question is this:

Let's say she is giving a group hitting lesson and there are 10 girls in the group. All 10 girls are from 3 local high schools but they also play for a travel team as well. We'll say 4 play for the Humdingers, 3 play for the Sky Blue, 2 for Sky Red and then there is Nell who is hoping to make a team after this lesson. Now Snidely Whiplash is driving by and he sees Nell doing well with the lesson so he calls the OHSAA and tells them to hop the next train to Cuyahoga Falls to see this. What would they tell Nell about her taking hitting lessons from Crystl Bustos while also playing High School ball?

And what would Dudley Doright do to Snidley Whiplash;&

Nothing wrong with Nell taking instruction. From General Sport Regs....

5.3) Individual skill instruction may be received in any sport by a squad member at any time in
individual lessons provided that these individual skill instructions do not violate any Board of
Education, school administrators’ or coaches’ policies. Notwithstanding the foregoing provision,
the coach may not conduct individual or group lessons for a squad member except during
June 1 to July 31 and during the season of the sport.

Thanks Iceblack. That is what I thought. A few of my players have ran into problems and when the dads have told the coaches the rule you quoted they respond with, "we were told at a meeting at the beginning of the year that if this happens there will be problems." They said if there is any of the players from your travel team attending the same group lesson it violates the rule.

Is there a problem with any of the others that are team mates both on a travel and a High School team?

I think the O$HAA rules pertaining to participation are meant to prevent organized games (contests) of more than 3 kids from the same HS team, and do not apply to clinics and lessons.

Note: When an individual or organization with a Napoleon complex tells you that your daughter can't participate in training with CB, please tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine... ;)

Its paid instruction. Its legal any way you look at it. I agree with Sammy here, if a coach , be it HS or TB dictates what you can or cannot do with with your dd outside of the team enviroment its time to move on. We have personally had this happen. No coach owns a player........Period

So according to what I see people saying here - It is OK to take instruction with your TB team all during school ball season. May not be CB, but can have a guest hitting instructor one night, infield instructor another, & outfield another.......So as long as it is Individual Skill lessons it is Ok???

Be careful.... When you say "instruction with your TB team during school ball" my interpretation would be that it is an organized team event which would violate the rule. If you say that you are taking individual instruction and one or two of your team mates are seeing the same instructor then you are okay. Additionally, if you are attending a clinic, if it is only a clinic for your organization or hosted by your organization then you could be seen as being in violation; if however, the clinic is open to all girls in an area you could be safe in attending - I say "could" because if it looks like the organization is trying to exclude anyone outside of their organization through lack of advertising, giving preference to members of the organization, or any other action the great wizards deem unacceptable you could be risking your DD's eligibility.

I would also say that your description of " ..can have a guest hitting instructor one night, infield instructor another, & outfield another..." would be considered an organized team event and therefore be a violation.

I agree with the Bear as individual instruction is on your time and your dime and has nothing to do with private instruction unless the travel ball team is paying for it or has tried to mandate it.

I am just a little biased however she is the best you have in your area hands down! :D
