Congratulations to Ohio Danger for winning the 14U Jami Snyder tournament this past weekend. The tournament was very well run and somehow we managed to miss most of the rain. It was an excellent weekend!
There was, however, a rule question about the lineup card that came up in the championship game that I wanted to clarify. Ohio Danger was up 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth and had the bases loaded and 1 out. Our batter was hit by a pitch, which forced in a run. After she went to first, the opposing coach complained that our batter was illegal because her number was incorrectly reported on the lineup card. After a long meeting by the umpires, they ruled that she was out and all runners returned to their bases. The error, which I did make when I filled out the lineup card, was that I inadvertently put the player?s position number (3) down instead of her uniform number (9). It was a dumb, but honest, mistake that had no bearing on how the game was played on the field (I?ve yet to see a uniform number make a difference ? if it did I want to know that number!). However, the decision to call the batter out and take away the run could have had a huge impact on the game?s outcome (Thankfully it didn?t -- we went on to win 8-0).
When I got home, I checked my ASA rule book and found the following rule concerning lineups:
Rule 4, Section 1 ??The lineup shall contain the first and last name, position and uniform number of each player. If a wrong number is on the lineup sheet, correct it and continue playing with no penalty.?
