Junior High Cuts?

Now that most junior high and high school teams have made their cuts, what determines how big of a squad to have? I'd like to know how many girls made your DD's current junior high team. Most travel teams function at 10-12. How could you play all of them? Why would you take player fees when all they will do is sit the bench? Or do you play everyone, regardless of skill? Why have the girls try out if they wouldn't make SOME cuts? In the era of pay to play in public schools, is this just price gauging parents who already have voted yes to levy #10? This is a question I get from time to time, and I'd like to just get a bead on what other people think out there.

This year 8th grade kept all girls - but roster is only 11.

Last year in 7th grade, it carried 13, and cut three, I believe.

they didn't have enough 8th graders last year, so 2 seventh played up, but the 7th grade had 13 girls...

My MS (7th & 8th) just made cuts Thursday night. We keep 14. The 8th grade cut 3 and the 7th grade had to cut 13 to get to 14. I talked to a friend who coaches in Pickerington at one of the jr highs and they kept 16. As a school coach I like 14 because of academic eligibility, health and injuries. As a travel coach 12 was a good number for us.

Our JH is made up of both 7th and 8th graders. We kept 14 girls of which a few who would have been cut were offered the option of purchasing a uniform and being able to attend all practices, games, etc so they could work on improving their skills. We are not charging them the full team price , only the cost of the uniform.
Our HS coach thought this was a great decision as we have a few girls who are out there giving it their all to improve and come out again next year. A couple of the parents have commented that they knew their daughter would not make the team and are very pleased that they were not just cut but given the opportunity to continue to train.
It is working great so far.

We don't cut. We're non-sactioned and include 6th graders. It's a very small rural school so we try to get as many out as we can. If we have 2 or more teams, so be it. We tend to think of it more as "spring training" for our summer teams.

now keeping extra for eligibility is a good one i forgot...hey, these are middle school girls, so there's always one out for grades/rolling eyes at the sub/skipping class...etc.. ;)

another one, is that i figure many of the girls also have other commitments, like band, or other non-sports activities

At the Jr. High level, the more you can get, the better. We have 17 ( including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ). We have the 8th graders play every game and rotate the 6th and 7th graders. Hopefully, this will eliminate some of the frustration of sitting the bench and keep the # of girls @ each game realistic. We'll have 11-12 @ each game. The girls' other activities help to determine which games they are "up". We'll see how it works.

vstormmerle we did something siilar to that with one of our teams a few years ago. It worked out just fine and the numbers have only gotten bigger. You guys are doing the right thing and it will pay off in the long run. Good luck this spring.
