I know umpires are just sometimes horrible at high school level, but when it is sooooooo obvious and onesided that it appears the fix was in.
Two things that shocked the heck out of me was their coach pushed the homeplate umpire after a call our way and nothing was done, and the umpire whom just was BAD on the bases and had no clue was shaking hands and high fiving the winning team after the game by their dugout. He was smiling and hamming it up with other team. Could not believe my eyes on that.

Bumping an ump is one thing and should be tossed......

But I like seeing kids have respect and saying good game to any umpire and hope they would back as well. I see it allot before games at many levels with a closed fist bump, so nobody can say money changed hands.... But why not? Some umps know many of the kids from year round playing and the kids enjoy having ones they know. I know my DD had her favorites as a catcher ......

As umpires we're trained to be friendly, but to not act like we're anyone's friend. Fraternizing, congratulating, or joking with the players should be kept to an absolute minimum.

You never know if somebody will misinterpret something you say- and they can't misinterpret what you don't say!

Even if you treated both teams as fairly as they can possibly be treated, you never know when someone will think that you're favoring one team or the other. Being an impartial observer is one of the most important attributes that a sports official can have. You don't want to do ANYTHING that could even remotely be misconstrued as being impartial or showing favoritism to one side.

When the games ends, teams line up to shake hands. Not umpires. Umpires are supposed to get off the field and leave the area as quickly as possible, not hang around and socialize.

Sure, people will say that they like it when umpires are friendly, but they need to know where to draw the line. We have enough problems to deal with during a game. No sense in making more trouble for yourself by ignoring your training and being too buddy-buddy with the teams!

We had taught our DD back at 8U to thank the umpires after the game, shake their hand if they offer, exchange a "good job" if offered and then walk away -
She had trouble understanding at first why they were in such a hurry to leave - But I think she understood fairly early on why they didn't want to be overly friendly - Especially when she became a pitcher.

She still makes a point to be sure to thank the ump no matter if she was getting squeezed or getting the river - and they have always been appreciative.

Barry, look on the bright side, it obviously didn't rain that much...
