JOHNSON CITY — When push came to shove, Daniel Boone shoved Science Hill — and hard. The Lady Trailblazers broke open a tie game with a seven-run sixth-inning outburst and earned a key 10-3 softball victory at the Lady Hilltoppers’ field on Wednesday evening. Boone improved to 9-1 in the Big Seven Conference and moved a half-game ahead of David Crockett. Those teams will meet May 2 with the league title likely on the line. Science Hill slipped to 7-4 in the league. In the sixth inning, Daniel Boone (25-12) got things started with a two-run double off the bat of Kayla Hubbard. Greyson Stevens followed with an RBI single and the Lady Trailblazers didn’t let up until they had a 10-3 lead. Stevens said the outburst was a team thing. “My teammates are great,” said Stevens. “They always have a lot of energy. They help me pull through when I need it the most.” Boone head coach Jeremy Jenkins said his kids responded well to falling behind 2-0, and also to Science Hill re-tying the game at 3-3. “It says a lot about our kids and the approach they took up there,” said Jenkins. “I thought our kids had some really good at-bats.” Stevens mashes Boone pushed a run across on Kayla Hubbard’s RBI hit to make it 2-1. Then Greyson Stevens stepped to the plate. She crushed a two-run blast over the left-center field fence for a 3-2 Boone lead. “I’ve been struggling a little bit, so I was shaken up,” said Stevens. “I took time to regroup myself. Then it was coming in slow motion, so I swung as hard as I possibly could. The bat did the rest. I can never really tell if it’s gone, but it did feel very, very good.” Science Hill regrouped with a home run off the bat of Mackenzie Powell in the bottom of the fifth. First strike Science Hill stepped on it early. A ripped hit by Kasey Bennett was followed by a towering no-doubt home run off the bat of Mia Edwardson in the bottom of the first inning. Stat leaders Nickolette Ferguson got the win in the circle, settling down to allow just one run after the first inning. Jaycie Jenkins, Ferguson, Hubbard and Stevens each had two hits. Science Hill got two hits from Makenzie Smith. Tip of the hat Science Hill assistant coach Bob Dempsey said Boone just got on a roll. “They squared everything up, and that’s the hardest we’ve been hit all year long,” said Dempsey. “We’ve been to South Carolina and we’ve been all around, and that’s the hardest we’ve been hit.”
