Looking for Umpires

I am updating my umpire database and am looking for umpires that can do NSA and USSSA.

I am holding tournaments in Wilmington sanctioned under NSA this Spring, Summer and Fall and I have been contacted by many tournament directors to field umpires for their tournaments.

I am looking for hardworking, on time, experience, diplomatic umpires ?(male or female) that want to work tournaments each weekend this year.

I pay bettter than most park directors and tournament directors but I do expect hustle, knowledge of the rules and many people know the standards that I am looking for in an umpire. Umpires can make or break a tournament. Period

If you are interested, please contact me : ?ohioquakerman@yahoo.com ?as soon as possible

Can I send you a list of a few umpires that you should avoid? :)

Yes, you may ;D These umpires that watch this website know that I am a fair man but there is no doubt that I look for the best of the best. I have people come from Canton, Ohio to me in Wilmington because they know when they come here, there isn't a bad umpire on my fields. I won't have it. I expect them to be respectful when asked to ask another umpires for help on a call if it is reasonable request. NO if and or buts. I was in Beavercreek last Fall behind the plate when Johnnie, the moderator of this site, asked the field guy for my help. It turned into a heated argument when he refused. JOhnnie could tell you about it. There was no sense for him to not ask. NONE AT ALL. I demand this and have taken an umpire off the field and sent him home and replaced him. Of course, with both coaches permission to do so. I don't put up with it.

The theory is: When the economy is good - you can't find an umpire.

When the economy is bad - you have too many .... :D

Being where I am located, I draw out of Dayton, Cincinnati and everywhere in between.

I have worked too hard to bring fast pitch and NSA to Wilmington and hopefully to the benefit of all the teams. Especially to the ones from Southwest Ohio who want to play NSA but don't want to travel. Last fall it was experimental as we had small tournaments to convince teams to come to a new place to play under USSSA. USSSA is over satuated in southwest Ohio. They loved this place according to their posts ( See NSA Tournaments Heat it Up tournament thread). There are posts on their thread to the similar.

It is my plans to make Wilmington the place to be and I'll be darn if umpires will break my spirit as we all know umpires can make or break your tournaments. Clearly, this is a fact.

I pay good umpires good money, better than most, I usually throw them some money for their gas, usually put them up as well. I wanted the best of the best and will not settle for anything less. I've umpires for 27 years so far and I know many in this general southwest area of Ohio. If a new one that I do not know ask to come... I check them out throughly with the district they are from and other tournament directors.
I do my homework on them.

I have college umpires on my list and use them frequently. They have worked hard to do college ball.
They will work just as hard to do the girls as well.

Hopefully, everybody comes join us this Spring, Summer and Fall in Wilmington. Because we do it for the girls and we do it up right. Last year we gave away $600.00 uniform vouchers for 1st place in our College Showcase/Uniform Blowout based on four teams per division. Beat out three teams and you win uniforms. Find that elsewhere. This year we are looking to give away JUGS guns. I bet we do, too.

So, if you know of any terrible umpires, please feel free to let me know...lol...

But, in the same sentence...... let me know if you consider someone very good and hardworking and I'll gladly give them a shot.

Do you absolutely require umpires that are NSA or USSSA registered? I'm only registered through ASA. and already booked to the eyeballs for this season, but might have an open date here or there.

One more question, kind of off the subject, but something that you brought up.

What if I refuse to go to my partner for help when I am 100% certain of my call, and my partner is in no position to offer any real help? Generally, I will always go for help if I'm blocked out or convinced that my partner might have some useful input. There are times that I will not, if the coach just seems to be fishing for a second opinion and is delaying the game.

Here is an actual play that happened to me:

Runner on first, I'm on bases in "B' position. Batter hits looping fly ball up the middle. F4 turns and goes out into shallow center after the ball. I turn and go out for the "catch/no catch".

F4 dives, away from the infield, gloves the ball in the air, then as she hits the ground the ball pops out of her glove. I signal and call "no catch".

After the play, defensive coach asks for time and comes out to me. He wants to know why I called "no catch" since the fielder initially had the ball in her glove. I explained that she did not maintain control of the ball throughout the catch and that her release of the ball was neither voluntary nor intentional.

He asks me to check with my partner. I said, "No".

I was about six feet away from the play and certain of what I saw. The plate umpire was 95-100 feet away from the play and his reponsibility was the runners, not the catch.

Would you have me taken off the field and replaced for not checking with my partner on this play?

Bretman, good morning. I'd love to have you here in Wilmington anytime you can be here. As long as you are NSA sanction for Wilmington, you are more than welcome to come to Wilmington. Anytime. I just do USSSA at the other Cincinnati parks as well and locally (Dayton, Beavercreek, Trenton, etc...)

I just think the umpire should have at least came to me and asked. Then I could tell him if I saw anything to help him with his call or not. The coach in question would have been fine with that. If I told Mr. Clark, it was too hard to judge from this distance... he would have probally said that is alright and thanked the base umpire for asking me. You'd have to know him.

Because of the fact the base umpired didn't... well it made it bad for the rest of the tournament as other coaches on the side lost all respect for the umpire not asking.... In the next game, when he was behind the plate, both coaches were questioning his strike calls. One team, even tried to sneak a coach to stand behind the fence at home plate....lol..... When I saw this... I stopped play and went in and told the asst coach to move or be ejected as well as the coach who sent him there.... I don't put up with that as well.

I just think he could have had the class to ask and give me the chance to say I couldn't tell and everything would have been fine. A coach will respect you for at least asking as well as an umpire giving him the I'm 95 ft. away answer which is what I would have given that coach.

I forgot to answer. ? No, I would not have asked the plate umpire for a judgement call in a dropped fly ball situation as you must retain the ball after falling. ?Hard for me to believe a coach didn't know that...Voluntary release is the rule as you well know.

Come on down anytime you wish Bretman, but , yes you must be NSA sanctioned and dressed NSA. Great health to you this season....
