Official Scorer's Question

Can any of you give me the proper official scoring for the dropped 3rd strike scenarios below?

1. The catcher picks up the ball and throws the runner out at 1b. Does the C get an assist and the 1b a putout? Or does this simply score as a K?
2. The catcher picks up the ball and tags the batter/runner. Does the C get a putout? Or does this, again, simply score as a K?
3. When the batter/runner reaches 1b safely, does this go as either a PB or WP? Perhaps an error if the C makes a poor throw to 1b?
4. Does the scoring depend if the C is my DD? Just kidding...;&

Thanks!

Joe

It's a k for pitcher either way. Would be a pb or wp or error on throw if I were scoring it. If it's an out I wouldn't give an assist, error, pb or wp if no other runners advanced because of it. Simply a k and an out

1. K 2-3
2. K 2U
3. If the B-R reaches due to an error, it is K and error (e.g. E2 or E3). If the B-R beats it out, it is K PB or K WP.
4. Of course!

The pitcher always gets credit for a K whether an out is recorded on the play or not ... to answer your questions ...

1) Yes, the catcher gets an assist and 1B gets a putout
2) Yes, the catcher gets a putout ... actually, the catcher gets a putout on all non-dropped strikeouts as well. There must be one putout recorded on every out in a game
3) If the runner reaches 1B safely, yes, any of those 3 things could be recorded depending on exactly what happened

Added later ... sorry, I see SoCal Dad beat me to the punch after I posted! (though perhaps my comments may add a little clarification)

The other possibility is "K FC" if the catcher has a play on the B-R, but instead makes an attempt on another runner or chooses to hold the ball to keep another runner from scoring.

chstrahl brings up an interesting point about accounting for the advancement of any other runners that are on base.
- It is SB if they were running on the pitch.
- It is PB or WP if the B-R reaches via PB or WP.
- I can't find anything authoritative if the B-R is retired or reaches on error.
- - If the error would have been the 3rd out, it's the error (e.g. E2 or E3).
- - If the runner didn't advance until they saw the defense making a play on someone else, it's FC.
- - Otherwise, it's PB or WP.
