Ohio Emearlds Tournament--Bad experience

Ohio Emeralds NSA qualifier.

1)Pool play with drop dead time limits. Did not even revert to last innning complete. One team could get more at bats. The stalling tactics this lead to were unbelievable.

2)Pool play schedule that had teams on Saturday playing 2 games at 8:30am & 7:00pm, 8:30 & 5:30, 10:00 & 7:00

3)Played some games on baseball fields with grass infields.

4)When the rains came Sunday morning and backed everything up they went to a drop dead time limit but did revert back to last complete inning. But for the 5:00 games they decided that if the home team were to take the lead in a bottom of the inning but didn't complete the inning it would not revert back.

5)They started Sunday using the ITB rule for ties, but around 3:00 they decided to start breaking ties by which team got the most runners to 3rd base. This is how my team got knocked out. We were eliminated from a tournament without losing. I have never heard this but the tournament director claims it is very common. I have never had a game end and nobody knew who won. We had to got to the tournament office and compare scorebooks to see who won.

Congrats to the teams that won, but lets be honest. This was one of the WORST RAN tourneys I have ever had the displeasure of attending. What loins said above PLUS, Forfits reversed, ever changing rulings, Umps pushing games, stalling tactics that reached the twlight zone, a team that did not play a single game during pool play, somehow is the 7th seed.. hmm could it have been a emeralds 13u team. Baseball pitching rubbers, that some coaches used to make a joke of the 24" rule. Fights, Cops, hotels. Otherwise a great weekend

Last I heard it was getting dark right before the finals so they were setting a series of rock, paper, scizzors matches among the kids to determine the champs.

Unfortunately we were eliminated early on Sunday so didn't run into all the same issues but can vouch for the pool game drop dead time limits (we lost 1 game due to this), and games on grass infields with short pitching rubbers. ?Our pool games were spaced fine though I was scrambling with the relatively late notice re: a 12:00 game on Friday. ?I think this is another example of a tourney taking on more teams than they could really accommodate ... believe I heard their primary fields were under construction. ?In my opinion, no game should ever be determined by how many runners get to any base other than home, by one team getting more at bats than another, or by taking played innings and runs off the board due to a time limit. ?

There was 2 girls hurt at this tourney, One from the Gahanna 12u bunch and 1 from the Tidalwaves, does anyone know how they are?

I coach the younger Gahanna 12u team and we did not have any injuries this weekend. I did not hear of anything about the other Gahanna 12u team unless it happened in the semi finals after I left. If she got hurt Friday or Saturday they had everyone there on Sunday

Just talked to the other Gahanna coach and he said all his girls are fine. I guess the Tidal Waves player tripped on the game ball coming off the field , fell and may have a broken arm. I guess she passed out and was taken away in an ambulance.

Hurt players during Emeralds tourny

My daughter was the Tidal Waves player that was hurt during the game. Sara was coming in off the field and one of the players rolled the game ball in toward the mound as everyone usually does. It came up from behind her and got under her foot as she was running, she felt the ball hit her heel and her cleat caught it. She didn't see it coming and she went down like a ton of bricks. She snapped both bones in her left arm. She is doing ok. It is just aggravating that it happened in such a senseless way, just a fluke. Hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else. I would like to commend everyone there who helped her out, she never passed out, never shed a tear and was commended by the paramedics for being so brave. I rode with her in the ambulance. We were very fortunate to have the paramedics standing by, although it was not a life threatening injury it was traumatic just the same. I've been at tournaments where there's not even an icepack handy. I know some of you are complaining about how the tournament was run, but from a safety standpoint, they did a great job.

I would have to agree with suezinohio. ?I was not unhappy with the way the Emerald tourny was run at all. ?Considering the rain on Sunday, I think they did an admirable job in getting all the games in. ?There are always going to be things about any given tournament that somebody doesn't like, especially if you're not the winner. ?As far as drop dead time limits, the coaches should have known this (or asked) going into the game. ?Would it have preferable to not play some games at all and flip a coin for the winner? ?Of course not! (although I hear they did that in Toledo) Any stalling tactics should have been addressed by the umpire. ?In our game, when our opponents had no batter ready, they were given an automatic strike one, and it didn't happen again. Regarding the grass infields, both teams in the game had to play on it - not just one. ?There was no advantage to either side - grass or no grass. ?All in all, it was one of the better tournament experiences we've had this summer. ?Keep up the good work Emeralds.

suzeinohio--sorry about the passed out comment, I got that 2nd hand. I hope your daughter is doing fine. What a freaky way to get injured.

Tigermom--All I can is if that was one of the best tournament experiences of the year for you WOW. That was the worst run tournament I have been to in my 3 years. Of course if I was in Toledo for coin flips, I would say that was worse.

Thankfully it wasnt a stalling tactic though. And the coach was upset with the girl, not the umpire. The coach even thanked the umpire for doing his job in that situation.

Lionsfastpitch,

No offense taken , I know how rumors are and I thought I'd just stop it before it became a true fairy tale. Needless to say, I did sit in the ambulance and think to myself...hmmm..20some games for my 13 year old son, 20 for my 15 year old son, and this was the 53rd for Sara and what a way to get hurt! I never could have imagined someone getting hurt that way. Talk about a fluke. The doctor told her to make up a grand story about how she made a diving catch in the outfield and flipped over the fence. Maybe we should listen to him. Anyhow, she is doing fine. She's bummed because no more swimming the rest of season, just when she finally has time to. Special thanks to her Tidal Waves team who sent a wonderful cookie bouquet and to her Emeralds 10U team who all telephoned and expressed concern. This turned out to be a great season and we met a lot of great softball families. It was a wonderful experience for Sara and our whole family. On a side note, as far as how the tournament was run, I was impressed that the people running the show in Avon Lake were not scared off by a little bit of rain. At least our games were played out. My son played in a CABA world series in Michigan last week and I can't believe how they can drag out games. 8 games in 6 days!!! One day there was the THREAT of rain, and they cancelled all the days games. What a moneymaker. Between all of my kids sports and tournaments this was run better than a lot that I've seen. I agree that coaches should have found out the rules ahead of time and then they would have known what to expect. Anyhow I think you had a lot of good people trying to do the best they could. Regards to all!
