Would you then be able to cut a freshman for an eighth grader, or would this just be allowed in a "no cut" situation?

JoeA and Vipers are right.

The OHSAA is not of the mindset to provide better opportunities to the youth athletes of the state. That is just a fact. It is the same as your insurance company telling your doctor what medicine to prescribe regardless of the doctor's expertise.

As far as middle school players in high school. I'd say it is a good exception to have to the rule based on the high school size and used as a method for fielding a full team, not to bring the middle school stars up.

I hear Laserleaders old HS team Hardin Northern will not be fielding a team this year. They only have like 43 girls in the HS, so I'm sure they would like the idea of using 8th graders.

Our school is small (avg. about 85 kids per grade). We started a non-sanctioned Jr. High program this year and we knew we would not have enough 7th & 8th graders to field a team so we opened it up to 6th graders (our middle school is 6,7, and 8th grades). I made the decision to not cut any 7th & 8th graders and take the best 6th graders to fill the team. I had to cut about three 6th graders who were better that their older classmates. This is not a travel ball team but a prep team for High School. Those cut 6th graders will have two more years to prep for HS. Sure I want to win but that is not the primary goal for this team as it is for travel ball.

Thats very close to the number of girls at Notre Dame in portsmouth also. We may have 50-52 ? But some do track, we have tennis. So the number of atheletes available is very small. Would'nt it be tons better at schools like this to have 1-3 7-8th graders and still have a team for the other 8 girls than to have no team at all ? Or sweet talk girls who have never played any FP before to join in at the HS level ? MD

Ringer --I did nearly the exact same thing for our jr high. --kept 4 6th graders but passed on 2 very good 5th graders. Also could have accepted a stud travel ball pitcher from another middle school (b/c it's not school based) but chose to keep it just girls in our school. great minds think alike LOL MD

Is there a dangerous situation created when you have possibly 13 y/o's playing againgst 18 y/o's? I realize there are dangers in every sport, and I personally am OK with the risks (I am a fan of the facemask as an option, not a requirement). What if a Varsity team with 13 y/o's (good for their team , but below average for a typical HS) goes to play a good solid team of 17 and 18 y/o's? Don't you think the level of competition puts the younger girls at serious risk of injury, and is it worth it just to field a team?

Personally, I am not sure of my own opinion of this, I thought I would throw it out.

fair question --I'm very aware that every 7-8 grade girl, even if she excels at her given sport may not be ready emotionally/physically etc to move up and play. I've got a 6' tall 160 lb 7th grader. Very mature also. She would be fine. Thats my point about having some flexability , instead of NO under any/all circumstances. MD

This is not possible in our day and age, it's either all or none, especially in this situation. ?If my 5', 85 pound 8th grader wants to play, how are you legally going to tell her she can't when she is the same age and grade as your 6', 160 pounder?

needless to say I'm all for letting them play. Parents and coaches can decide better than adm's in columbus or cleveland or wherever . MD

Our school is very small. Figure about 20-25 girls or so in each grade. Our jr. high program program(non-sactioned) is in it's second year and includes sixth graders. We ended up with 2 teams this year. The more of them that play the better!
