Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitch Speeds

When my oldest pitched (doesn't anymore), there were several really tall 10, 11 and 12 year olds that could absolutely bring it. I always thought that at 10u (with the smaller ball) there were at least 3 kids that threw in the low fifties (they were all 5'3-5'6). I recall there being a couple 12u's that threw mid fifties (but again, these girls were 5'8-5'9 at age 12). Then we hear about the freak 13u kid that is 6' and thowing 60.....well yeah, if you are that tall sure you might be able to throw that fast.
Most 10's are probably 43-45, most 12s are 46-48.

The AVERAGE pitcher at Pennsbury last year was 54MPH and 17RPS.
(Taking all FB and averaging them)
Your AVERAGE high school pitcher would be below that (50 MPH) working speed.
Your AVERAGE 10U < than 40. Again this is their actual working speed and not a peak speed thrown once on a gun in SC.

Remember that this is all irrelevant.
At 10U it's about mechanics and throwing each pitch harder than the last.
If a 10U is throwing 50 with bad mechanics; she'll likely only be throwing at 50 in high school while nursing repetitive stress injuries (if pitching at all) and will not have the breaking balls needed to be successful.

I clocked a Texas girl at 10U ASA/USA at 51 then her change at 38 on the next pitch. The girls we faced in Bloomington for the most part were upper 40's though. I think most of the girls we faced on the year was in the low 40's with the ace of the really good teams in the mid to upper 40's. I think a lot of the girls trying out for 10U in the fall probably aren't touching 40 yet. My dd wasn't there and while she isn't the teams top pitcher she has earned pitching time at 10u with a fastball in the low 40's.

Well most of the pitchers my dds team saw this year I would say threw 40-45. But we did go and watch the 10s at laser nation and saw some smoke throwers. A coach gunned a laser pitcher at 54 and i would say grand slam, ice and north coast all had pitchers throwing close to 50... But like it has been said mechanics are key and a change up is a big help!!!

yes corin tom pitched for the lasers at laser nation. caeli fannin who pitches for lady liberty fastest pitch was 54. i think shes playin for someone different next year.

Speed is great, but not when ur throwing it over the backstop and in the dirt. Few of the faster pitchers I saw were very iinconsistent. With the 40ft distance it gives the batters an advantage now so the fast pitchers are not going to be as important as a pitcher with a killer change up.

My dd has been with same pitching coach for 4 yrs, never uses gun even when requested. Mechanics, location etc. As a parent it's easy to get caught up in the speed thing, but I have learned not to ask. It puts more pressure on dd and therefor may not focus on mechanics. Best thing we ever did for her pitching was find her a good fit in a pitching coach.

Not saying that average to above average speed is not important, but the gun can be a very useful tool to determine if mechanics are correct. If there is consistency in speeds of the various pitches, mechanics are consistant.

Always remember though, good hitters will hit fast. Just ask Bouldersdad. ;&

I think the gun is a great motivational tool. It shows gains from all the hard work.
