My 10U dd is not the best hitter, but she can lay a bunt down like the best of them and has the speed to back it up. She doesn't have to be a power hitter, just a girl who can put it in play for a sacrifice or try to leg it out, then why not.

Some of my best hitters are pitchers...Bonner, Bowers, Hortman, Collier, McPeek, J Fox, A Meyers, Schwable to name a few...let them hit.

Abbott, Cat use a DH and Finch...let her hit!

as i do agree with everyone let me also add that this wonderful young lady had several injuries last year that kept her off the mound, and they didnt not come from pitching, it is very early in this 2010 season and the coaches are being very cautious

What's the fear? Getting hit by a pitch? Running the bases? I say let her hit and once on base, use a courtesy runner.

:) Please ignore this advice if playing against SDS 14U. :)

DD was the "stud pitcher" all her years of travel and now is college pitcher.....she loves to hit! had probably the one of the top 3 bats in High School...lead team more than once in batting average....she was able to tell what pitch was coming from watching pitcher....was frequently DH'd in tournement ball especially @ 18u when we had multiple games..she was the go to pitcher when other got in trouble...in addition to her regular rotation, usually pitched most of Sunday games....in college her coach doesn't bat his pitchers...afraid of injury and has recruited players just to hit....she is sophomore and has had 3 @ bats total....500 era....( The 2 upper classmen pitchers from her freshmen year....senior and junior have never had an @ bat their entire collegant careers....she is now the #1) she feels she is really much more in the game when she also gets to play offense but to be honest is velocity challenged, lOL....but has no problem using designated runners....Know from watching her play she seems to be much happier and more turned into game when she playes both sides of the ball....one travel coach noted her unhappiness @ not getting to hit and realized she actually was more effective on the mound when she got to hit then when he DH'd her....to her to slap him if he ever made that mistake again...lol

All good points. My DD also was a good hitter and pitched in college. Good thing she could hit because knee problems kept her out of the circle and she ended up in center field. Had she been a bad hitter, she would have been riding the pine.

while i understand the reasoning of not wanting to bat her because she is your season, but especially younger ages remember are job is to build softball players not win tournaments that is an extra bonus your main job as coach is to develop softball players i say let her hit

I have to agree our 2 pitchers both studs have the highest batting average the most RBI,S they are the most competive girls on that field.

I would like everyones opinion on batting your ace pitchers. I have a friend that daughter playes for a neo area team. Their team only has one real ace. Should the coach bat her or not? when? or how much? i have mixed emotions and i would like everyones opinion please.
Thanks

Why the mixed emotions? Are you concerned that she will get tired, hurt, etc...? What is your hesitation - assuming she can hit.

Thank you coach Dave and to all who have posted on this thread.
I have always taught my children to put the needs of others first.
This includes putting the needs of the team you play on before your own.
I have been the one not wanting her to bat and risk injury that could hurt the team this year.
But after reading many of the posts on this thread I see that I have been looking at it all wrong.
Thank you all for the help.
