Re: Is it a hit?

Your first question: hit. It was in the hole and ss was making a great effort just to get to it. Just because a glove gets on it, doesn't necessarily mean its an error. Second question: I agree with you, base hit 2 base error.

first one, if normal effort would not resulted in a out - hit
second one, triple "you can not award an error for fielding the ball too slowly" from the ATEC Scoring Guidelines.

I concur with Rattlers; hit & triple. You cannot award the SS an error for trying to make an extraordinary play nor the CF for not trying. An error should be reserved for the instance where it is reasonable to expect the fielder to make the play easily or with normal effort.

Now if the CF played the ball and booted it or misplayed a flyball I would say E.

Unfortunately mental errors do not get reflected in the book, so the 2nd one would have to be a triple based on the information you provided.

Base hit to center feild the ball gets by the girl without touching it is it a single with 2 base E or is it a triple? Even though the ball was hit really hard I say its E.

You have to ask how did it get by her? That makes a difference in scoring. For example, The other day during the Indians and Twins game, Aaron Boone hit a soft liner to center. As Tori Hunter was coming in the ball hit the ground and skipped on an angle to the right. Tori fell down while trying to change directions on a dead run. It got by Tori but it was still a double.

On any call that calls for either an E or a Hit, I check the entry the scorekeeper made. ?I have a pretty good feel on the difference between and E and a Hit and I do this to make sure the scorekeeper and I are on the same page. ?There has been times I had her correct certain entries. I explain the thoughts behind each change about why it was an E or a Hit. ?

I know that some coaches/scorekeepers may try to up a hit total but my philosophy is, if you earn it you get it, if not....that's life. Hit it in the hole next time.

My DD has also been in the same situation. I encourage everyone on this board to download the ATEC scoring guidelines and go by them. Coaches if you can keep a copy handy when needed it would make your stats more accurate. Encourage your keepers to read it.

Now regarding questioning the scorekeeper - I would say definitely NOT do that. The coach cannot allow parents to hover over the book and see how things are being scored. I am surprised you got close enough to the book to see it.

I know errors are made, but that is the way it is. If it is really bad, you may need to keep your own book. Be fair and be consistent and score everyone the same. If you are unsure - look in the guide.
