?on a hit ground ball, the runner on second goes to third, ball hits runner on back foot, she is safe at third. I asked the ump why she wasnt out? he said" she did not do it on purpose" ?I was dumbfounded, if the ball hit the baserunner she is out right? ? ?

Not always. If the ball has passed a fielder (not including the pitcher) and no other fielder had a chance at fielding the ball to make and out, then the runner is NOT out.

Well, it sounds like you got short-changed. Hopefully it didn't have an impact on the outcome.

What tournament were you at?

Question was ( Runner hit by Ball is she out)?? If ball was not fielded and hit runner then answer is YES. If ball is bobbled, or deflected off a glove, then hits runner than I would have to say NO. ???????

An umpire who didn't know the rules of the game? Shocking! That guy and every one like him (and there are many) should be prosecuted for theft. Taking money under false pretenses is a crime. If they don't know the game and its rules, then they shouldn't be taking the money.

Vipers,

Here is a scenario. A runner on 1st base. You have a slapper at bat. You have the second baseman playing up in front of the baseline from 1st base to second base. The batter hits a ball that goes by the 2nd baseman (without touching the fielder in any way), then hits the runner from 1st base on the heel, then the ball continues into right field.

Ruling would be: Runner is not out, play ball.

ASA rulebook, Rule 8, Batter-runner and Runner, Section4. Runners are entitled to advance with liability to be put out.

paragraph E. If a fair ball

1. Contacts an umpire or a runner after having passed a fielder other than the pitcher, and provided that no other fielder had a chance to make an out,

or

2. When a fair batted ball has been touched by a fielder, including the pitcher, and the runner did not intentionally interfere with the batted ball or the fielder attempting to field the batted ball.

EFFECT: The ball is live.

The next words out of my mouth would be, "I want to file a protest".

This is a clear misapplication of the rule. "Intent" by the runner is not an issue when interfering with an untouched batted ball. It either hit her or it didn't and it's either interference or it's not. The runner may be hit "accidently" and it's still interference.

Yesterday, I was working a game and one of the teams was called The Panthers. We had a similar play, and at first I thought that it might have been your game. But I see you're in Norton- this game was in Westerville.

One more comment- an umpire should be willing to answer any question posed by a coach, as long as it is a legitimate question and the coach is asking in a civil manner. Umpires that stonewall with the, "One more word outta you..." threat are usually covering up their own shortcomings.

Save the "ejection" warnings for coaches that are over-the-line or out-of-control. If a coach has a question, hear him out, answer the question, then move on.

Gotta love rec umps in particular. My dd is playing in a 12U league with little league rules. Rule is runner cannot leave to steal until the ball crosses the plate, if she does she is out. Ump (whose DD catches for the opposing team) was told several times that was the rule (as he usually umps 10U boys. DD is catching several girls on the other team are leaving way early, she is mumbling under her helmet that's 1 out , that's 2 outs etc until he finally realizes what he is missing he sends the girl back to first. Then continues to miss the call the rest of the game. My dd is miffed at this point, it really didn't matter our girls still won, but the score would have been different. Then about 2 weeks later my son is playing a 10u game has the hit of his life into deep center field is excited (he usually gets walked or bunts) let's go of the bat a little early. Calls him out for throwing the bat. Shouldn't he have gotten a warning? I mean the kid is only 10. It had to be clear that he didn't do it on purpose.

Rec is always interesting. I do think they should have a rule against umps umping games that their child is playing on. That happens to us so often.

Don't generalize, their are some very good umpires out there. If you think you can impact the game for the positive please feel free to do what I did "put the blue/red on and get out there".

However as an umpire I see many umpires that have no clue what they are doing and do not take their positions very seriously.

I take away something from every game to investgate and learn from.

I have related scoring question on this situation. Runner on first, batter hits a hard ball toward the 2nd base hole for a sure base hit, but it strikes the runner resulting in the runner being called out. What is the scoring for the batter? Are they charge for an at bat?

The runner is credited with an At-Bat and is awarded 1st base on a Fielder's Choice.
