So they drop these sports softball, men’s swimming and diving, and women’s tennis and wrestling.

They drop 3 women sports and drop 2 men sports. But of course it's effected more women then men.

I think Swimming and Diving are considered one sport......so they cut 2 sports from each, leaving 7 male sports and 10 women.....

It effects 58 men and 25 women! What article did you read? Over twice as many males....

And a good reminder to make sure during the recruiting process for players to ask themselves "Would I still want to go to school here if, for whatever reason, I could not play softball..." It's not always about career ending injuries...

I think somebody needs to go back and reread the article

Women's Sports

Softball
Tennis

Men's Sports

Wrestling
Swimming and Diving

Affected Athletes

58 men
25 women

I don’t care if it is men or women, it is a sad day to see these sports dropped.

Very unfortunate.

Unfortunately, it boils down to money (obviously.) The NCAA had made it nearly impossible for the "mid-major" schools athletics to survive.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the start of a trend.

Sorry, I don't understand this, how does the NCAA have a play in this?

The NCAA, at the d1 level, sets a limit of 85 full scholarships for football.

Full.

As in they can not be split in any shape, for, or fashion.

There are 11 men on a football field at a time, there are 9 women on a softball field at a time. They need 73 more scholarships though???

Tell me how the NCAA is not involved with this.

YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan has eliminated 42 open positions and laid off an additional 17 people in an effort to reduce its projected budget deficit.

EMU Vice President for Communications Walter Kraft informed faculty and staff of the cuts Thursday, March 8, noting that the university examined all areas of its budget in determining reductions, including athletics.

A complete listing of the layoffs and eliminated positions can be viewed online.

Boils down to EMU cant finance there funds. There football team attendance has been poor for years since they have had 2 winning seasons and a .500 season since 1995. Probably breaking even and dont have any funds to help cover other sports.

The EMU AD is/was hot garbage. Cut wrestling several years ago..as well as some others. Wanted the money to all go towards Football. Football is where all his eggs were placed and they just can't build a winner.
