Lefty batter, corners up to cover bunt, hard one bouncer to pitcher, fielded cleanly, 1st baseman does not go back to cover 1st, 2nd baseman does not go over to cover first, batter/runner safe at first. How is it scored? If it is an error who is the error charged to? Hopefully that is enough info, if not please ask because this is an actual situation that happened Friday night.

My first inclination is to say FC, but I believe the correct answer is a single. Failure to cover isn't by definition an error, just a coaching opportunity.

Base hit, although there are mental errors, they aren't scored that way...

per the NCAA "Softball Scoring Rules" it is a hit per j. When no one covers the base or a fielder is late in covering the base.

Looks like F4 was the one that covered 1B and got there before the runner. The problem was the pitcher tried to throw before someone was covering 1B and was late making the throw after regrouping. Still a hit.

There are a couple of coaching opportunities here. First, the pitcher needs to take their time on a quick comebacker like this with the bases empty or 2 outs. Some coaches teach them to trot towards 1B while waiting for someone to cover 1B. Second, everyone should be able to time their throws to a base so they begin ahead of the fielder being set up to receive the throw. It is often the difference between getting an out or not as they get older and the speed of the game increases.

Good news is we were on offense and that was my daughter batting. Not sure what coaching opportunities I have for her other than aim for the 5-6 hole instead of hitting it straight back to the pitcher. Other info is that it was the bottom of the 7th, no outs, and they were down by 1. She ended up scoring when the next batter bunted and there was a throw in the dirt at first and an overthrow at home.

FYI, this was a 16U game.

thanks for the input those are some good coaching points.

Single; however, if I were keeping score for just my own personal enjoyment, I would have put a catching error on the second basemen. But, that's probably why I'm not the official scorekeeper!
