KINGSPORT, Tenn. – On Tuesday night, the Appalachian Athletic Conference announced the 2018 softball awards, and Bryan College's Hannah O'Shields (JR/LaFayette, Ga.) was the lone Lion who earned a spot on an All-Conference Team. O'Shields, Bryan's standout slugger this season, was one of nine individuals who garnered All-AAC Second Team honors. First-year Head Coach Mark Ritchhart helped guide Bryan to a 9th-place finish in the AAC regular-season standings with a 12-31 overall record and 9-14 conference record. Despite not making the conference tournament, the Lions improved overall at the plate with one of the more difficult schedules in the country. The Lions had six bouts with top-10 teams and another eight in the top-25. Bryan lifted their batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage compared to last year's numbers. This year, Bryan ended above Bluefield College (Va.), St. Andrews University (N.C.), Columbia College (S.C.), and Allen University (S.C.). The Lions trailed middle of the pack foes Brenau University (Ga.), who has been a top-25 team most of the season, and Montreat College (N.C.) by just a few games. The competitiveness of the AAC can be seen from the tie between Union College (Ky.) and Reinhardt University (Ga.) for third place and the deadlock amongst Milligan College (Tenn.) and Point University (Ga.) for fourth place. In the end, it was Truett McConnell University (Ga.) who prevailed as the Regular-Season Champion at 19-5 in the AAC and 34-14 overall while receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches Top-25 poll. Tennessee Wesleyan University trailed in second at 18-6 in conference play and 27-15 overall.
