WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons scored a combined 25 runs in sweeping past the Southwestern College Lady Builders tonight (Apr. 18) at the Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita.

The wins move the Falcons into second place in the KCAC with a 12-4 league record.

After watching the Lady Builders come back from a nine-run deficit and take the lead, the Falcons jumped back on top with the benefit of a two-run double by Emily Escobar (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) in the bottom of the fourth.

The Falcons extended the lead when Kaelyn Smith (SR/Tuscon, Ariz.) went deep with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth for her second homer of the season.

The Lady Builders would come within one on an unearned run in the sixth, but an RBI single by Shelby Belloni (JR/Lakewood, Colo. ) gave the Falcons a valuable insurance tally in the bottom of the inning.

In the opening frame, Kylie Fox (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) made a tremendous diving catch in foul territory that stranded runners at the corners and keep the Lady Builders off the board.

Fox then drew a walk that loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning to set up a two-run double by Smith.

Breanna Vest (JR/Fayettevile, Ark. ) then traded places with Smith and doubled home two more runs to stake the Falcons to a 4-0 edge before making their first out.

One batter later, Vest came home with the fifth run of the inning on an RBI single by Kennedy Brunson (SR/Garden City, Kan.).

The Falcons (21-19, 12-4 KCAC) weren't through and scored four more times in the inning, including a bases-clearing double by Belloni.

But the Lady Builders (18-19, 6-10 KCAC) charged back with 10 unanswered runs, starting with a three-run home run by MacKenzie Lyons that cut the Falcon lead to 9-5.

A three-run double by Sydni Fulks and RBI single by Alex Ritzema tied the score in the third before an error resulted in another tally that put Southwestern in front.

Maci Walker (SR/Mansfield, Texas) started for the Falcons before giving way to Alicia Dunagan (JR/Douglass, Kan.), who pitched 2 1/3 innings and got the win. Heather Breslin (SR/Anchorage, Alas.) then came on for the final three innings, allowing only an unearned run to pick up her third save of the season.

Belloni drove in a career-best four runs and Smith had three RBIs to lead the Falcons' attack in the opener. Vest and Renee Downey (SO/Modesto, Calif.) each had three hits for the Falcons.

The Falcons again scored first in the nightcap as RBI singles by Vest and Downey put Friends up 2-0 after an inning.

Following a run-scoring single by Belloni in the second, Vest struck again with a solo homer in the third to extend the lead to four runs.

Still in the fourth, a throwing error chased home Brunson and Kayhill followed that with an RBI double. Moriah Kayhill (SR/Ottawa, Kan.) then scored the Falcons' seventh run of the game on a single Belloni.

Smith then played long ball with second homer of the day, a solo shot to lead off the fourth and make it 8-0.

Three outs away from the run rule, the Lady Builders stayed alive and scored five in the fifth, two coming on a triple by Peyton Timmerman.

The Falcons got four of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, featuring a two-run single by Fox and a sacrifice fly from Vest.

For an encore to her opening game performance, Belloni had a career-best five hits in the second game win, going a perfect 5-of-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two more runs driven in.

Kayhill also recorded a career-high four hits in four at-bats and scored three times.

Vest went 3-of-3 and drove home three runs for the Falcons.

Breslin started the second game and sailed through four scoreless innings on only one hit.

She then came back into the game in the fifth and finished her night with 6 2/3 innings in the circle, giving up two runs and striking out three in the winning effort.

The Falcons are next scheduled to play at Sterling College Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21) at 1 pm.
