[Softball] Softball Drops Pair to Open Spring Trip

Doane Softball opened the 2020 Tucson Spring Games with a pair of outings on the diamond. In their first game, the Tigers went nine innings before falling 5-1 to Saint Francis (IL). The night-cap against Dakota State went to the Trojans, 7-2.

In the opener, the Tigers and Saints battled through seven scoreless innings of play. With extra innings, each team was able to put the last batter from the previous inning on second base to start the frame. Saint Francis took advantage in the top of the 8th with a run scoring on a hit. Doane countered with a run scoring on a passed ball.

In the 9th, the Saints picked up four hits following a Doane error and pushed four runs across the plate. Doane was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers had three hits in the game, two from Erika Herrera (SR/Corona, Calif.) and one from Ashley Meyer (SR/Temecula, Calif.).

Dakota State came from behind to knock off the Tigers in the final game of the day. In the 2nd inning, Doane struck with two runs on three hits. Tayler Mashburn (SR/Centennial. Colo.) drove in Meyer with a RBI-single and Alicia Vint (SO/Onalaska, Wash.) plated Herrera with a RBI-single.

The Trojans came back with a run in the bottom of the 2nd and took the lead with two runs in the 3rd. Dakota State plated two runs in the 4th and 6th innings as well to secure their win.

Doane was held to five hits in the game, two from Vint. Dakota State picked up 14 hits in the game.

On Tuesday, the Tigers will take on Indiana Tech and Roosevelt (Ill.) in Tucson.
