Sterling, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons swept past the Sterling College Lady Warriors today (Apr. 26) by scores of 5-3 and 13-6 in Sterling, Kan.

In the opening game victory, the Falcons jumped on top 3-0, with two runs coming on RBI singles by Kaelyn Smith (SR/Tuscon, Ariz.) and Renee Downey (SO/Modesto, Calif.) in the first inning.

Kylie Fox (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) then extended the lead with a single in the second inning that plated Isabella Gonzalez (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.).

But Friends had to pull it out in extra innings as the Lady Warriors came back with a run in the fifth and tied the score with a two-run seventh inning.

The winning tallies came in the eighth inning when Breanna Vest (JR/Fayettevile, Ark. ) doubled home Moriah Kayhill (SR/Ottawa, Kan. ), who started the inning on second base due to the international tiebreaker.

Vest then came home with an insurance run on a single by Kennedy Brunson (SR/Garden City, Kan.).

Heather Breslin (SR/Anchorage, Alas.) started and pitched all eight innings for the Falcons, wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth to finish out the win.

Breslin allowed only one earned run and struck out five in her eight innings in the circle.

Smith and Vest each recorded two hits for the Falcons, with Chica Bati going three-for-four for the Lady Warriors.

The Falcons wouldn't need extra innings in the nightcap, getting a career-high tying four hits from Kayhill along with a career-high tying three RBIs from Smith.

Friends took control early when Shelby Belloni (JR/Lakewood, Colo. ) hit an RBI single in the first before a two-run double by Smith and run-scoring single from Fox made it 4-0 in the second.

With the lead at 5-3, the Falcons (23-21, 14-6 KCAC) created more separation by pushing through four runs in the fourth inning.

After the Lady Warriors (13-27, 6-16 KCAC) climbed back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, Vest smacked her team-leading seventh home run of the season in the fifth.

The Falcons then effectively put it away with a three spot in the sixth.

In addition to Kayhill and Smith's production, the Falcons also got three apiece from Fox and Brunson.

Maci Walker (SR/Mansfield, Texas) got the win in the second tilt, lasting six innings and giving up six runs (five earned) along with three strikeouts.

Alicia Dunagan (JR/Douglass, Kan.) finished the win with a pair of scoreless innings and struck out one.

The Falcons will host the University of Saint Mary in their home finale tomorrow (Apr. 27) at 4 pm at the Two Rivers Youth Complex.
