WICHITA, Kan. -- The Ottawa University Braves slipped by the Friends University Falcons late in the first game to win 8-6 and then won the second tilt 10-0 today (Apr. 24) at the Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita.

After the Falcons clawed back from three runs down in the opening game to tie the score on a sacrifice fly by Kaelyn Smith (SR/Tuscon, Ariz.) in the bottom of the sixth, Ellena Cott-Laurie hit her second homer of the game in the top of the seventh to put the Braves right back in front. A sacrifice fly by Sierra Rettele then added an insurance run for Ottawa.

The Braves got on the board with a run in the first, but the Falcons promptly answered with a three spot in the bottom of the inning.

Shelby Belloni (JR/Lakewood, Colo. ) got things rolling with a single and plated the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Kaelyn Smith.

Consecutive RBI doubles by Breanna Vest (JR/Fayettevile, Ark. ) and Renee Downey (SO/Modesto, Calif.) resulted in putting the Falcons on top.

The Braves then continued the early see-saw with four runs in the second, capped by a two-run single by Cott-Laurie and run-scoring single from Aryn Smith.

Cott-Laurie wasn't through and added to the Ottawa edge with a solo homer in the fourth to make it a three-run game.

But Belloni decided to play long ball herself and went deep for her second homer of the season, a solo blast to again bring the Falcons within two runs. Vest later doubled home Smith to bring the Falcons within a run at 6-5.

Maci Walker (SR/Mansfield, Texas) started for the Falcons (21-21, 12-6 KCAC) and struck out one in four innings, with six runs allowed. Alicia Dunagan (JR/Douglass, Kan.) followed Walker and pitched two scoreless innings before allowing the two runs in the seventh.

Belloni had three hits in four at-bats in the first game for the Falcons, with Vest and Emily Escobar (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) each recording two hits.

Cott-Laurie was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate for Ottawa and finished with five RBIs.

Amber Flummerfelt went seven innings for the Braves and allowed six runs in getting the win.

The nightcap was scoreless until the Braves (31-13, 14-6 KCAC) broke through with four in the fourth, with three of those runs coming on a three-run double by Tomi-Lyn Hickman.

The Braves then got another home run from Cott-Laurie and a two-run blast by Jordyn Sarnecki to power a six-run fifth inning to put it away.

Kylie Fox (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) had two of the Falcons' three hits in the second game, with Sarnecki and Kenzie Steven each putting in three hits for the Braves.

Heather Breslin (SR/Anchorage, Alas.) held the Braves scoreless through the first three frames, but finished with seven runs allowed (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Dunagan got the final out of the fifth and gave up three unearned runs.

The Falcons will now turn around and play at Sterling College Thursday (Apr. 26) starting at noon.
