Great Bend, Kan. – The Friends University Softball Falcons concluded the 2018 season with a split of two games today (May 4) at the KCAC Tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex in Great Bend, Kan.

The Falcons kept their season going with a 6-2 win over McPherson College before the Ottawa University Braves rallied for a 5-4 win over Friends in an elimination game.

Kaelyn Smith (SR/Tuscon, Ariz.) got the Falcons started on the right note against McPherson with a two-run double in the first inning.

Breanna Vest (JR/Fayettevile, Ark. ) doubled home a run in the third and the Falcons busted things open with a three-run fifth inning.

RBI singles by Vest, Kennedy Brunson (SR/Garden City, Kan.) and Mackenzie Nichols (JR/Columbus, Ohio) put the Falcons up by six runs.

Maci Walker (SR/Mansfield, Texas) went all seven innings for the Falcons, striking out five with two runs allowed.

Shelby Belloni (JR/Lakewood, Colo. ) went 3-of-4 for the Falcons in their first game, with Vest and Kylie Fox (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) each recording two hits.

In the loss to Ottawa, the Falcons led much of the way until the Braves rallied for three runs in the sixth to grab the lead.

Tomi-Lyn Hickman singled home two runs to tie the score before stealing two bases and scoring the go-ahead run on a wild throw.

Isabella Gonzales singled to lead off the seventh for the Falcons and advanced to third with two outs, but Braves starter Rebekah Clinton got a pop out to finish the win.

After the Braves jumped on top with a run in the first, Emily Escobar (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) singled home Brunson in the second to tie the score and Vest had an RBI single in the third to help the Falcons plate two runs.

Vest then scored to make it 4-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Smith.

Heather Breslin (SR/Anchorage, Alas.) started for Friends and allowed two runs and struck out three in four innings, while Walker pitched the next two frames and surrendered three runs (two earned) with one strikeout.

Clinton gave up four runs, but only one earned and struck out five over seven innings for Ottawa.

The Falcons, under 14th year head coach Tony Segovia, finish the season at 26-24 and were 15-7 in the KCAC.
