WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons wrapped up the regular season with a split against the University of Saint Mary Spires, winning the opening game 8-3 before falling in a slugfest in the second game 11-10.

The Falcons wasted no time in taking command in the first matchup, batting around and putting together five runs in the first inning.

Isabella Gonzalez (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) reached on a walk to lead off the frame and came across with the game's first run on a double by Shelby Belloni (JR/Lakewood, Colo. ), who then scored as Kylie Fox (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) followed with her first career triple.

Emily Escobar (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) added the finishing touches with a two-run single that made it 5-0.

After an infield single by Moriah Kayhill (SR/Ottawa, Kan. ) scored Kennedy Brunson (SR/Garden City, Kan.) to push the lead to six runs, the Spires got back in it with three runs in the fifth that featured an RBI double by Samantha Torres.

The Falcons got two of the runs back in the fifth inning and that was more than enough for Maci Walker (SR/Mansfield, Texas) to finish off the win.

Walker allowed just two earned runs over seven innings, striking out three and walking none.

Fox drove in three runs, while Kayhill, Breanna Vest (JR/Fayettevile, Ark. ) and Kaelyn Smith (SR/Tuscon, Ariz.) each had two hits.

With the second game in a 10-10 tie, Lindsey Fishman hit a two-out, go-ahead solo homer in the top of the seventh to give the Spires the lead.

The Falcons would place the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but Katlyn Schiefen got a strikeout to end the game.

The nightcap began with Heather Breslin (SR/Anchorage, Alas.) tossing a scoreless first inning, with the aid of a terrific throw from Shelby Belloni in left field that threw a runner out at the plate to end the frame.

Saint Mary got on the board first with two runs in the second, only to have Smith answer right back for the Falcons with her fourth homer of the season, a two-run blast that tied the score.

The Spires quickly reclaimed the lead in the third, as Torres doubled home a run and then scored on a single by Schiefen.

But Mackenzie Nichols (JR/Columbus, Ohio) had the ultimate response, following an RBI double by Vest with her first career grand slam to put the Falcons on top 7-4.

A two-run double by Torres in the top of the fourth continued the back-and-forth affair and keyed a four-run inning to put the Spires right back in front by a run.

The Falcons fought back again and tied the score as Smith singled in pinch runner Cassie Jones (JR/Erie, Colo. ) for the third run of the sixth to create another gridlock. Fox and Gonzalez also put in RBI singles in the inning.

Vest and Gonzalez each had three hits in the second game for the Falcons (24-22, 15-7 KCAC), with Smith driving in three runs.

Kaila Trowbridge and Cassidy Harbert each produced three hits for the Spires (18-31, 11-11 KCAC).

The Falcons will now prepare to compete in the KCAC postseason tournament, set to begin on May 2 in Great Bend, Kan.
