COLUMBIA, S.C. – Softball opened its conference season on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep over Columbia International University. The Cavs shut down CIU in game one for a 3-0 win before holding their ground to win 6-3 in game two. The sweep brings the squad to 11-9 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

"We are seeing the ball really well at the plate, and these ladies are putting together lots of hits. We had 22 hits in the doubleheader, and that helped us pull out the wins." said head coach Heather Maston. "We will continue to work out little snags that come up and keep pushing as we head deeper into conference play. I'm excited to see this team get everything together."

Game 1: 3-0 Win
The Cavs scattered nine hits throughout the game with a solo homerun coming off Abby Swilley's bat. Ashlyn Vickers and Destiny Munoz both belted doubles in the game. Liana Elliott and Bree Powell also had a multi-hit game to contribute to the win.

Cailin Warner pitched the one-hit shutout while only walking two batters and striking out 14 of the 26 batters faced.

Game 2: 6-3 Win
Game two brought the Cavs' bats out again as the team belted 13 hits. Munoz and Vanessa Bartkewicz both went 3-4 at the plate in game two knocking in an RBI each. Munoz also crossed the plate twice.

The Cavs showed patience at the plate to draw five walks during the game.

Charlie Smith kept the Rams' hitters at bay while only allowing five hits scattered throughout the game and striking out six.

Up Next: The originally scheduled Cavs Classic has been cancelled due to weather. The Cavs return to action with a double-header at Mars Hill on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 1 p.m. The games are scheduled to be played at Big League Camp in Marion, NC.
