Cochran, Ga. – Montreat softball sits at 6-8 on the season after splitting their final day at the Middle Georgia Round Robin with a 9-1 loss to Coastal Georgia in game one and a 5-4 victory against the University of Pikeville in game two.

Game 1: 9-1 loss to Coastal Georgia
The Cavs got down to a 6-0 deficit in the first two innings, and ultimately could not recover as Coastal Georgia pounded 11 hits in the game.

Starting pitcher Cailin Warner struck out a batter in her 1.2 innings while also knocking in Montreat's lone run of the game. Warner sent Ashley Starnes home on a single to shallow left-center in the fifth and final inning.

Starnes along with Mikki Shelton, Abby Swilley, and Ashlyn Vickers provided the rest of the hits for the Cavs in the game.

Game 2: 5-4 win against UPike
Shelton started the game with a lead-off triple and scored Montreat's first run on Liana Elliott's groundout to second to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Cavs gave up a trio of runs between the fourth and fifth innings, but got a run back in the sixth when Ronnie Ellis knocked in Bree Powell to enter the final inning down 3-2, setting up their biggest offensive performance of the game.

In the top of the seventh, Swilley belted a double to left-center that pushed Shelton, Marissa Romeo, and Elliott across the plate to take the lead back, and make the score 5-3.

The Cavs got into a jam in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs, but Powell launched a throw from left field to Kelsey Nolasco who was waiting at the plate to tag what would be UPike's tying run for the first out. This proved to be the turning point as starting pitcher Charlie Smith came back in to shut down the remaining UPike batters, getting the save and securing a win for her team.

Ellis got the win on the mound, retiring a batter in her two innings of work.

"Despite giving UPike three runs in errant throws, we fought back and did a great job of playing our game to come back for the win," said head coach Heather Maston. "I'm seeing a scrappier side of our team that I'm excited about. They're not giving up and they are working hard from the first pitch to the last one each game."

Up Next: The Cavs travel to Mars Hill for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 21. First pitch is set for 1pm.
