Madelyn Thompson helped St. Ambrose make an early statement in CCAC play as she supplied a pair of walk-off hits, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning of Game 2, to help the Bees sweep a doubleheader from Saint Xavier Friday afternoon at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex.

SAU won the opener 4-3 on Thompson's two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh before taking the second game 9-6 on the junior catcher's fourth homer of the season.

Thompson, the team leader with 25 RBIs, drove in five runs in helping St. Ambrose move to 17-9 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Her first and only RBI in Game 1 capped a two-run seventh-inning rally. The Bees, who led 2-0 on a Christina Pembrook two-run double in the third, trailed 3-2 entering the seventh. But they immediately loaded the bases as Karley Kopaska was hit by a pitch, Tara Lance singled and everyone was safe on Colleen Barrett's fielder's choice. After Kopaska was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball, Pembrook's ground out to short tied the game. Then Thompson came through with a single to left to score Barrett with the game-winning run.

It was a sign of things to come.

St. Ambrose again built an early lead in the nightcap. Thompson had an RBI single in the first inning then the Bees exploded for four runs in the fourth, with Barrett's two-run double the big blow. Kopaska and Pembrook also knocked in runs that gave SAU a 5-0 lead.

But Saint Xavier (11-3, 0-2 CCAC) again battled back. The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth then took the lead with a three-run sixth.

Libby Munsterman sent the game to extra innings with her seventh-inning double that scored Morgan Krieger to forge a 6-6 tie.

Then it was time for more Thompson heroics. Olivia McClintock reached on a one-out single in the eighth and then Pembrook walked. Thompson followed with her blast to left-center, her third hit of the game, to complete the sweep.

McClintock, Pembrook, Munsterman and Kopaska each had two hits in the second game. Jane Thomas got the win after allowing just one hit over 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Pembrook earned the win in the opener in relief of Thomas. Pembrook pitched the final two innings, allowing just a single run.

St. Ambrose will next visit Indiana-South Bend for a conference doubleheader Sunday.
