After dropping the first game of Friday's doubleheader with defending California Pacific Conference champion Marymount California, Saint Katherine earned its first win of the young season by stunning the Mariners 12-2 in the nightcap. It was all MCU in the first game as reigning Cal Pac Pitcher of the Year DeAndria Lockett picked up where she left off and fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts in the 6-inning 10-0 win. Diamond Lewis and Madison Loui each had three hits, with Lewis scoring three times and Loui driving in three. Tatyana Carvajal homered for MCU. Game two was a much different story. In the first at-bat of the game, the Mariners' Shannelle Sablan slapped a liner that USK shortstop Kristyn Whitley snagged it to take away a base hit, and that play set the tone. Samantha Whitworth got the start for the Firebirds, going all five innings in the circle and surrendering just one earned run. Tied at 2-2 after three innings, Miranda Gil hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 4th to give the Firebirds the lead, and in the next frame Aryanna Rivera extended that margin with a two-out grand slam to put the Firebirds up by 10. Annie Bennett went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Gil, Rivera, and Alexia Terrazas each added two hits. USK, which opened the week with two losses to La Verne, evened its early season record at 3-3 with a two-game sweep at La Sierra on Sunday.
