Does anyone have any drills or advise on how to teach a girl to stop throwing sidearm? ?

Its a bad habit girls get into but once they start it seems like you can't stop them.

Thanks ?;)

I've asked a similiar question ---My DD tends to do that , at 11 sometimes she throws like a 8. anyway I've been told throwing a weighted ball will correct this. MD

I had the same problem. If you don't break them of it the shoulder and elbow will pay. Kate Drohan said they had 5 arm surgeries the season before her and her sister arrived at Northwestern due to bad throwing form. But there is a simple solution for girls who slip into sidearming. You stand them next to a chain link fence while throwing. By the second time they rap their knuckles against it, the mental discipline really starts to kick in. Cruel? Perhaps. Effective? Yes.

We found lots of throwing and long throws helps. It forces them to throw correctly.

My DD has the same problem, and our pitching coach is letting us use a device that teaches properly overhand throwing that fits over the elbow. I will find out the name of it, before we return it. She uses it warming up and it is working, her throws from short have improved. Her pitching coach told us if she doesn't fix it she could damage her elbow.

Sidearm throwing is a hard habit to break.

We tried thromax with one girl, but she hated it (it's not what you call comfortable, but it does what it advertises...). Personally, I like to tape balls with electrical tape to make a perfect circle around the four seams. Then have the girl put her fingers on a seam with her middle finger on the tape, and make sure her thumb is on the tape. When she throws, a solid black line should be visible at "12-6 o'clock" or close.... If not, she is not throwing properly and it is easy to see. It's impossible to throw sidearm and get a 12-6 rotation. Visible feedback is a good way to teach.

They have to really start with fundamental throwing form, accentuate the motions (big follow through) and do it slowly, then build from there until she can throw quickly with comfort. It shouldn't take all that long to make the overhand throw feel right if she is willing to work at it.
