Top Conditioning Drills

While conditioning for endurance might not be "used" during the game it will pay off in the 5th game on a 90 degree day, give me well conditioned athletes over out of shape girls any day.
You can't tell me pitchers don't need to be in shape, or how about a catcher that squats 300 times on that 90 degree day, sure quickness and agility are important but in my opinion conditioning should not be overlooked.

Here is a qoute from Brandon Marcello strength and conditioning coach for USA softball and Baylor University. He is talking about pitchers here...

"The big thing is to make sure they are conditioned and they don?t fatigue as quickly. When fatigue sets in that?s when you?re setting yourself up for possible injuries to occur. So if we can increase that stamina where they don?t get fatigued as quickly we?ve made a great contribution for injury prevention. And hopefully it translated onto the field. "

If you have a DD that is getting close to the recruiting age, ask a college coach for a copy of their conditioning program. Most DI teams have a thick booklet detailing all the drills and lifts. I'll warn you that at the DI level, it's probably a LOT more intense than anything your DD has ever done before. New freshman recruits are strongly urged to show up in the fall in top condition, or they are in for a rude awakening!

Sammy, good information. I know my oldest was rudely awakened. BTW, does your daughter attend Uniontown Lake?

No, she's a college freshman playing DI. She was an early signer last year. Last spring she asked her coach to send her a copy of the conditioning program so she could incorporate it into her workouts during last summer. Even after "going by the book" last summer, the college workouts this winter were grueling. The upside is she thought she was in great shape before, but now she says she's in the best shape she's EVER been in!

By the way, I remember seeing a post on OFC or Huddle showing a link to Heidelberg's baseball conditioning a while back. I think the general conditioning is pretty similar to softball.
