I guess no one keeps up with Div 3 high schools. Are these girls not of quality caliber to play college softball? In my opinion it is not all about Div 1 and Div 11. Some girls are equally as good Div 1 or 11 players but live in smaller school systems. I have been around softball for 40 plus years either as a coach or spectator due to daughters and granddaughters who played. I have been around the block with recruiting also. For the most part - there is no such thing as a "full ride" in softball even at Division 1 colleges. There is always something that needs to be paid for such as books, partial tuition, housing, etc. The point of playing softball is for the love of the game and if you get lucky and you are noticed - you may get some type of college scholarship out of it. My best advice for anyone who has a daughter playing softball is to keep those grades as high as you can as that is where most of your money is going to come from to help pay for college.

Hi Softballgram,

I agree with you except for the full ride comment. My Daughter does have a full athletic scholarship to a Div 1 college. Her tuition, books, room, and food are paid for and I also know a friend in same position for another Div 1 school. My Daughter is a Freshman and her friend (both from same high school is a Junior; so yes it does happen. The get lucky part is if you probably do nothing; but as I taught my players to write to colleges and keep in contact...colleges do notice. I do agree with same talent in the High School Level from Div 1 to Div 3 can be the same in some to most cases

Bloom Carroll is D3 right? Nuff said there. Not that they are the only D3 team to talk about, I think they're just one of the better known ones. D1,D2,D3....as far down the line as the divisions go, there are studs in each division. Some are just better known than others, because of the Division.....If Jenna Lilley was D3 I'm pretty sure the whole state would still have known who she was IMO. As far as knowing who the teams in D3 to look out for are..... Ive heard Bloom has another tough pitcher throwing this year. My dd team is D2, so thats more of what i follow, even then I havent done much research this yr on any teams.... shame on me.

Thank you enlightening me on this issue of full-rides. I know for the most part that there are very few that get to play at that level from OHIO. When you consider the hundreds from all over the county who compete - it is very limited. I think most have a good opportunity to play Div 2 and 3. That is where the grades are so important. There is a chance at Div 2 that you will get some type of scholarship but there are none given for D3. I know that in Div 1 - they will split scholarships among girls. I also know that if you are a walk-on and can prove yourself - you have a good chance of getting a scholarship offer. I remember my daughter being told that girls leave or transfer. They also give offers out there to girls who do not prove their worth on the softball field and they lose their scholarships. A lot of times - these scholarships are given to walk-ons. No door is completely closed. This where hard work pays off.

Middletown Madison - DIII HS - has 2 Jrs with D1 scholarship commitments - Robert Morris and Charleston Southern, a third player will likely go D1, and 2 Jrs are going D2.
