As tryout notices start popping up - I'm wondering what are some of the best or worst tryouts you've been to? Not looking for team names here - just the "why" or "what" made those tryouts good or bad.
Should be some fun stories!

Was at a tryout last year, none of the coaches daughters were there. Just rubbed me the wrong way.

DD attended a tryout last season - midway through the tryout - girls were sitting down on the field/bases while the coaches were hitting infield - they wanted my daughter to sit down but she knew you do not do that. Also agree with DOKelm3 - coaches daughters should be there and leading by example as well as any other girls already given a spot - to see how they interact together.

I am a bit confused on the DD comments.

What if she has already attended an earlier try-out?

We complain about coaches having DD's on the team (not this thread but earlier posts on OFC) and then we blast them for not having them at each and every try-out??? I think it is a bit unfair to the DDs.

As for some dislikes:

1. Post what position(s) you are looking for. Don't have girls show-up and then tell everyone you are just looking for a certain position.
2. Know what tournaments you are planning to be in and then follow-up on getting into those tournaments.

I can't stand a tryout that is unorganized, unplanned and when girls are just standing around. There is a short period of time to see what my kid can do. Make the most of the time.

My DD is pretty young and only attended a couple of tryouts last year for the experience. I really appreciate when a coach can take a minute to tell you strengths and weaknesses....what do we need to work on for her to have a better chance at making a team? I really disliked not being given a call back. It may be a hard call to make but even if a kid didn't make a team they need to hear it from the coach!

We changed our tryout structure years ago. Because we don't change the roster over each year we are able to do it this way. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone - but it does for us and personally I would like it this way if I was a players parent.

* We don't have open tryouts. Contacts must be made in advance of the workout. If we don't know the player or can't get information about them in advance we will take an hour to work them out individually sometime before the tryout date.
* Our tryouts are done exactly like your practices. They might run a little longer because of the additional players. We break everything, every skill down in 10-15 minute intervals. Everything is preplanned and on laminated (best investment we have made) sheets for all the coaches. One parent keeps us on time. In our mind we run practices better than most teams and we want the players and families to understand what will be expected of them if they make the team.
* Families know everything in advance - team costs, practices, potential schedule, home work expectations, conduct guidelines, etc. No surprizes for the families and no drama allowed after the fact.
* All players must attend - whether current teammates or potential players. Team chemistry is critical. We all spend so much time together everyone needs to understand the team makeup before making decisions.

Like I said - after seeing and doing many different tryouts over the years this works for us.
