Tryouts - Neighborhood Teams - Careful

Word of caution - careful of those organizations who support one particular High School - they might say they take girls from Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky -- but really it is all about their town, their high school - the "neighborhood" girls. Will not mention Organization name other than southern ohio but the core girls are from one particular area........thats neighborhood teams at its best with their daddy's coaching. People from the outside are "interlopers".

Thats kind of badmouthing all travel teams that support a high school and not always true. In Gahanna our travel teams support our high school but we occasionly bring in a couple players to fill needs. If we are looking outside our community we let people know our needs up front. Also I coach one of these teams without a daughter playing. I would advise against such a general putdown.

Obviously -- i was just stating my opinion not bashing anything -- obviously from your defensive comment -- i must have hit a nerve and for that I apologize -- just trying to get a new subject out there -- no intentions of team/organization/area bashing at all --

No nerve. Our program runs just fine. Just sounded like a general bashing of all community based travel teams.

I'm sure some of these teams do take other players. But they may not , and probably won't play as much as the girls from that school district. They will be used as a fill in, to support those players in the school district. The only complaint would be if the team is misleading the outside player(s). It does happen, so just avoid those teams. No big deal. Do your homework before try-outs. A good clue is the only returning players are from that school district.

My dd played on a team that some might consider a "community" team this year and we couldn't have been more pleased. She played almost every inning and batted 2nd all year long. We live almost an hour away from the "community" but that never mattered because my dd loved the team so much! We definitely will be coming back next year. :)

Every team or organization is from somehwere. So this point works aginst everyone to some extent. Therefore, the perception is that where they are from will always get the biggest benefit. It would be intellectually dishonest to say that this never happens, but I think that it actually happens the way it was implied above far less then it is made out to be.

In the end all of the players who intend to play HS ball benefit. It is one of the main reasons for doing travel ball in the first place.

Again best advise is, do your homeowrk. Also attend the tryouts and ask questions. Also talk to parents at the tryouts who were part of the team last year. Most will be honest with you.

Finally this is very important, be sure to ask what the team or organizations goal is for each team. Seems like a simple question but the answers may surprise you. Also, do not just accept the answer given. If they tell you that they intend to compete for the ASA national championship then they better darn sure have a plan about how they will go about that. It will not just happen because someone says it will. Spend your time and money wisely.
