What tryouts did everyone go to and what tryouts were the best? Just curious to see what parents like and dislike about certain tryouts. I havent been to another tryout in years, however we want to host the best tryout we possibly can. Feed back is very important to us.

Only went to 2 tryouts......both were run very different, but very effectively.
1st one they did infield with hitting to 2nd and 1st, 2nd going to SS and 1st going to 3rd and then they switched it. Hitting to both at the same time and it ran extremely smoothly. They did 2 outfield at the same time also and this went just as well. Hitting was done at 2 toss stations and tees. Plus your normal running times taken.
2nd one they did one where they fielded every position in the infield and made the throw to 1st after each field of the ball. This one was very good for seeing the effort each girl was willing to make, especially at the last one hit. They did outfield and they had 3 areas they hit to here and was the same as infield, the last one was to see how much each girl would push themselves. Hitting was off the machine and this went well also.
Both ran very efficient and effective tryouts.......I think they challenged the players very well at both of these.

I didn't go this year, but my DD said the Stingrays, hands down, based on organization, feedback and general likeability of the coach and other players.

My DH also complimented the Glory on their organization at tryouts and the follow-up by the coach afterwards.

Keep them moving and show that you are interested in watching the girls. As a parent, there is nothing worse than going to a tryout and having kids stand around and the coaches not paying attention to the players trying out. You want to see what they are capable of doing so work them hard and push them, I like when my kids have a good workout and are all sweaty and tired.

We went to a few, by far the worst was watching 40 girls stand in line to field a ground ball at shortstop, lots of wasted time.

Had a new one at the end of the tryouts... "I'll send out an email to 15 names and the first 12 to respond make the team." no kidding, 16U!!

I'm thinking he/she didn't really mean it to be taken seriously. Who's to say which 12 really responded first. The coach was probably just pushing for rapid responses don't you think? Or maybe he/she is that goofy!

We only went to two tryouts this year...but we did drop by to say hello to some of our friends at the Static and I still say that I've never seen a more energetic, well organized and efficient tryout. I love how they do it. :yahoo:

I don't know how good or bad it is, but at the Liberty Blazers 10u tryouts we don't use pitching machines. The girls hit live pitching. Then you see how they truly react.(head coach former college pitcher)

DD attended (4) tryouts. All had a really good turnout. Two of them (30+)... I felt the Doom and Static tryouts really focused on exposing strengths and weaknesses using a pretty standard system. I was able to watch a few really cool drills and setups I really liked from both organizations. My only suggestion would be asking the returning girls to participate. I think this would help the girls see where they measure up and also let parents see what coaches are expecting. I also believe it opens communications lines for existing and returning players. They have a common ground to work from. JMHO

Thanks guys!

We have the returning players join in on the final day and we use these drills in practice from time to time. We will opt to not bring returning girls back when numbers are too high.

If there are a lot of girls there, then I suggest splitting them up so there are so many doing on activity. Hard to watch that many girls doing the same thing. I also suggest having extra coaches there so someone is watching and scoring the players at each station. And lastly, I think the girls should be given a copy of their evaluations so they know what to work on. Obviously this last one could prompt some disappointment and could have to deal with some disgruntled parent but if done correctly I think it could work.

I'd suggest working out the pitchers and catchers at the beginning of the tryout rather than at the end. Unless you aren't as interested in seeing what a pitcher can do when she is "fresh" and are looking more towards stamina, it seems strange to not watch your pitchers until after they've done a couple hours of intense infield, outfield, and batting evaluation.
