Under the right circumstances, give me the gamer. There are some players that simply turn it up a notch come game time. However, if the bad practice is due to a lack of focus, respect or caring.....that can be an issue that rubs off on your other Players.

At the younger ages the gamer is who will get time on the field for obvious reasons. When they get into more of a competitive environment they will be the frustrated one on the bench though. They might make it to college but unless they are a freaky talented hitter or pitcher they won't see much playing time because you prove yourself to the coaches at practice....better learn to be a "gamer" at practice too when the entire roster has your same level of talent

True to some extent. It is great if you perform in practice but if you don't get it done game time, then you will also find yourself the bench for someone who can.

Every practice is a tryout and your performance in a game is usually a reflection of how hard or how much effort you put into your practice. Especially at the younger ages if a player doesn't put forth effort during practice and turns it up a notch during games other players who do work hard will soon be passing them up in skill level. I have seen this type a player many times and they usually become a below average player with a bad attitude and also are prone to be resistant leaders.

I'm not sure I see a lot of above average practice players who are not above average game players. Generally if you take a kid who is willing to put in the time and effort and combine that with proper instruction, it is unusual to not see that pay big dividends in game situations. Not always immediately, but usually not that far down the road either. Perhaps when you do find one of these "above average practice players, but average game players" your simply looking at someone without much of an aptitude for the game.... give me the gamer in that case!
