WOW!! Crazy rumors. After reading this thread this morning, I called our UIC and
discussed this thread with him and asked him if any umpire had to leave a
field for any reason.... drunk? (I knew that wasn't true), health reason, family
emergency, etc.... and "no umpire had to leave a field for any reason.
#2 - The Massillon police did come down on Sunday morning, who I talked to in
the parking lot before they entered the park. They were there to check why there
were 5 or 6 campers in the Genshaft parking lot all weekend. There happened to be
a carnival going on this weekend in downtown Massillon, and the "City" was wondering
if people from the carnival were "illegally camping down at Genshaft". Once they saw
all of the softball being played and talking to us, there were no problems.
The two officers then entered the park for a half hour or so to watch some softball and
walk around. Of course, with quite a few Massillon umpires working and two Massillon
police officers.... they were bound to know one another and shared some small talk.
To clarify.... NO DRUNKEN UMPIRES, no problems, no escorting off the field, no problems of
any kind!!
I can't vouch for the overall quality of the umpiring all weekend, but let's be honest..... in ALL
my years of watching my daughter play (10 years), and coaching teams over the years, and
watching 100's and 100's of games as a fan, I don't think I've ever left a tournament thinking
the umpires "were great". We all disagree with calls throughout virtually every game we watch.
Thanks to all who came to play in our tournament and all of the parents/fans who came out to
support the girls. The Ohio Wolfpack Organization appreciates it!!
