was it an error?

My dd was playing left field, had a fly ball hit to her right and was on a dead sprint when she got to the ball. It hit her glove but she could not hold on to it. It was one of those bending shot and it was bending away from her. I asked the dad standing beside me how he would score it and he said "error" but after thinking about it, the dad I ask was the pitchers dad so sure to him it would be an error. Also it was my dd first varsity game, only got to play because the jv did not have a game. Did have a dad tell me in the previous 7 varsity games not one of the other girls that played left field would have gotten a glove on it. And two other dad agreed with him. So would you score it an error.

Always a Gray Area... Depends on whether the ball "should" have been caught with ordinary effort. If she was in full sprint and barely got leather on the ball, then No.

Agree. Sight unseen....full out sprint just to get to the ball is "extraordinary effort". This is a base hit.

Agree with Louuuuu and bretman.

ATEC -
q - No error is charged if the fielder drops a ball after running a considerable distance to catch it, or if she fails in her attempt to catch it while running at a high rate of speed.

NCAA - No error is charged to a fielder in the following situations:
14.22.8 When a fielder drops a ball after running a considerable distance or if she fails in her attempt to catch the ball while running at a high rate of speed.

Congrats on her first varsity game!

I would have to see it, and even then it still might be a judgement call ... but based on strictly as described here, agree with others that it's probably a hit.

Someone told me once if it touches glove it is an error. I don't agree with that. I believe that if you have to take more than 5 or 6 steps to a ball, it is a hit. However, I do believe that if an outfield takes 3 or 4 steps FORWARD the goes back, but would have caught it if they didn't move at all, whether the ball was touched or not, it is an error. IMHO

I know a dad that keeps telling me if it hit the glove it's an error. I don't know if he's hung up on baseball or what, but I have learned through my time scoring many games that isn't always the case.

Again, the hitting the glove thing is a general guideline, and has more to do with fly balls than ground balls. If a fielder dives for a ball on the ground or in the air, and it hits the glove and rolls away, that is usually not an error.

If it hits in the pocket of the glove, full sprint or not its an error. if it goes of the tip or barely into the glove then no that a hit assuming that a full effort was in place.

Well my DD hit one to the warning track in her first HS game and the CF and LF both pulled up and the ball dropped next to them. I called it a 1/2 a hit....LOL

But she would have gotten 1 rbi instead of 2.
