What do you think of this coach?

Never said that it was appropriate for a player to tell a high school coach that her travel coach would do things another way. You are reading an awful lot into what I actually said. We don't have anything suggesting that this kid had EVER told her coach that something he wanted her to do was wrong because of a travel coach. To publicly chastise her by screaming about her "other team" suggests to me that this is not one of the MANY MANY fine coaches who coach high school ball and either coach travel ball as well or have an appreciation of the experience that travel ball can give a player. I never said all high school coaches are defensive about travel ball experience, because I don't believe that. I had an "aha" moment about this particular coach under these particular circumstances. Your somewhat emotional response appears to do what you accuse me of doing, namely making broad generalizations when it is more likely that each situation has to be evaluated on its own.

Sorry the only thing in my post regarding your post was the aha moment, otherwise I was just stating my opinion on the "other team" comment and what my aha moment was not about your take on the situation. I have no idea why you would think I had an emotional response.

Am I the only one who had an "aha" moment when reading the Coach's rant about what this player does on her "other team"? If the H.S. Coach is defensive about his coaching ability and is working that out by harping on travel ball players, it's probably a no win situation for this young lady. If he keeps screaming at her in front of everyone, I'd give her the green light to decide for herself whether it is worth staying on the team. Sure, it would be wonderful if the player took the Coach's attitude as a motivation to work even harder, but IMHO spring semester of a Senior year is crazy enough without that kind of "motivation".

Thank you for someone finally mentioning that! Other post, the only comment she made was that she was always taught to get the lead runner if she could. She didn't say anything about travel ball or anything else.

I was always taught to respect your coaches, no matter what. If you take pitching lessons, but your high school ball coach tells you something different, you need to be respectful and listen!

If your daughter has any aspiration to play college ball, you and her better get used to the screaming and yelling. In your face screaming, yelling from across the field, in the middle of the inning on the field, it doesn't matter, screaming happens. Toughen up!

If a player is going to do everything their travel ball coach told them to do, during high school ball, even when the high school ball coach wants it done differently, she is going to find herself sitting on the bench.

Do you think Pat Summit from Tennessee yells at her players? And Coach K from Duke yells at his? I think so. Actually I'm almost positive they do, so why is it not okay for other coaches to yell?

I have actually been to quite a few games and the best coaches don't do that. In fact, some of the very best teams we have played from all across the country I never saw or heard coaches jumping up and down, acting childish and screaming at their girls. Yes, they did speak with them in the dug out when they made a mistake, there is a huge difference in constructive corrective critisism and acting like a two year old throwing a temper tantrum. Rarely if ever have I seen coaches act that way, and the ones that did had really crappy teams, because "light bulb" girls don't play better when they feel degraded. They have these little things called emotions which just get more upset when someone is degrading them.

You go girl!

Sorry guys but some of you just don't get this about girls, and some do. Maybe 18 and older 16u can handle this, but girls take it as a personal attack. They may tell guys one thing, but I guarantee you they tell their friends that are female the total opposite.

By the way there is a huge difference between communicating loudly and screaming degrading remarks. I have seen both and the later is the most disctructive thing that any coach can do to a female athlete.

who's huggin' trees?? I want to watch...

all seriousness, ranting and raving and showing your "spitting mad" side should left to Bobby Knight. Yelling can be done right and wrong. I do my best to constructively talk to the ump... :D and that too can be done right... meaning if I don't get tossed I must be ok . I have seen Phil Jackson yell at his players but he too has a way with his players and they understand the emotion. "Know YOUR" audience and how the "dynamically emphasized emotional talking" will impact them. Some do need it, others do not. A time and place is all if controlled right.
