I just received this today, and thought I'd pass it along!

What Will You Be Remembered For?

Hi FastpitchBlue,

I blogged about the nomination of Crystl Bustos as the 2008 USA Softball Player of the Year. It's definitely a well-deserved honor for who is considered by many to be one of the best hitters to ever play the game especially after her 2008 stellar season.

Here's a quote in the new release by USA Softball: "She leaves behind a legacy not only as the most powerful hitter in the game, but also as a leader on and off the field.

" As you probably remember, she was one of the few players on the US team to leave her cleats at home plate after the Olympic final. This powerful symbol means that you just played your last game and that are you're retiring.

After you retire from something, people will usually talk about what you are leaving behind and what you will most be remembered for. So, let me ask you, as a coach or as a player... - How do you want to be remembered? - What do you want people to talk about when you retire?- What legacy will you leave behind?

These are powerful questions. What would people say if you were to leave today? Think about it for a second and be honest with yourself. What would people say about you today if you were to leave the game and is that what you would want to be remembered for? If so - then great. If not, think really hard about what image you're carrying and how to conduct yourself on the field.

Every single day, whether at games or practices, you want to conduct yourself and act like you want to be remembered. That's important. You build your legacy every day.

And keep in mind, people selective memory and ONLY remember the dominant trait or characteristic. In other words, if you happen to be unpleasant, selfish, or have a bad attitude on a regular basis, that's what people will remember you for even though you might be a nice, helpful and respectful person at other times. Write down what you want people to remember your for andwhat legacy you want to leave behind and be that personevery single ON and OFF the field whether you're a coachor a player. Who loves ya? ;-)

Hopefully , I'll be remebered as a Coach, Umpire, and Friend, who was Fair, Honest and Cared about everyone on the TEAM.

Who awards the Player of the Year award, and where can all of the nominees be seen?

FPBLUE, Great post. Seems like I have lots of work and focus,as I'm pretty sure the legacy I want and the one I would have are more different then I would like to admit.

Thanks for a great message.

Good God, this is a loaded question - especially when I just been told that my favorite uncle was just been entered into a hospice program. It made me face my own mortality.

What would I want others to remember about me?

1. I hope I was a good coach.
2. I hope I made you smile and possibly laugh.
3. I hope that I was an inspiration to at least one person.
4. I hope that there are some I have inspired to be a coach.
5. I hope that someone in the Heat organization hits the lottery and builds an indoor facility named "Johnnies Softball World"
6. Quite honestly, I don't know if I would ever leave a legacy but if there is WIFI in the afterlife - I would like to log onto OFC to see what my friends are doing.

That is the truth.

I hope that I will be remembered for being someone that would do anything for their family. Including going to prison if the need arises.

Wow this could get deep!!!
* To be remembered as a coach who's had a positive impact on at least 1 player.

* To be remembered as a coach who taught my players that you don’t have to be the best player to experience success because success comes in all shapes and sizes.

* That this game we all love should be fun.

* That i taught my players how to win with dignity and loose with pride.

* That thru sports you can learn how to deal with adversity.

* That I was always respectful of my peers.

* That I taught my players that self confidence is something they should never loose sight of.

And finally I would hope that I taught my players that being physically able to play this game is a gift… and it’s one they should never take for granted.

Johnnies:

Would you settle for "JoeA and Johnnies' Softball World"?

Of course, that would mean one of us would need to start playing the lottery . . .
