What Would You Do?

If you had a DD going into her first year at 14U that tried out and is offered a position on a 16U team, what would you do? Keeping in mind that she is talented enough, what are some questions or circumstances to consider before making such a move?

Congratulations to her for being offered this spot!! There are several considerations in my opinion. Coaching- does the coaching staff have the ability and the track record to make your daughter better. Travel- 16U teams MAY travel farther then 14 teams do in order to get exposure for their players. Playing time- should be a consideration on any team, what are your expectations, and how do they fit with the track record NOT THE PROMISES of the team. These categories all boil down to knowing what your DD wants and what fits the goals and abilities of the family. The other part of this is knowing the make-up of the team and how comfortable you are putting your DD in that social situation. I would assume going into next summer your DD would be no older then getting ready to start high school, possibly just going into the 8th grade. On a 16U team you can have a combination of girls some of whom could be entering their senior year in high school. They might fit well together, but expect a different level of social skills, activities and interests. It is something that can be managed, but remember at tournaments the team is at the same place with only a fraction of the time spent actually playing softball.
