My daughter plays for the Ohio Ice (12u that is moving up to 13u this year). She will also play school ball for Hyre (8th grade)...as far as I know there is no conflict there (there were other travel ball players on this school team the last few years)

What my question is...Can she also participate in a "rec ball" tourney for 6 weeks. This is the local "ellet rec ball assn" that is taking a few players from the various teams and letting them play in an NSA fall league for practice????? My daughter has played ellet rec ball since she was 5 but they have never participated in an NSA function before! Is there a conflict between any of the three????

Thanks....Laura

The ellet team is participating in a 12u fall league at the Pickle rd complex...not sure what it is called but was asked by her rec ball coach of the last few years if she could play and I am not sure if she can.....I would assume if she signs a roster with him she would need a release to play with the Ice...but the Ice is going to play a 14u fall ball league also...not sure what to do!

Thanks!

Here are two webpages that you will want to keep for future reference:

www.ohsaa.org/general/about/Bylaws.pdf OHSAA Bylaws (look in section 10)
www.ohsaa.org/sports/rglts/SB06-07.pdf OHSAA Softball Specific Regulations (look in Section 4)

Once she makes the 8th grade team, there is no participation allowed on ANY non-scholastic team during the scholastic season. ?This would include the rec teams.

As for the NSA, if they are ask to sign an official NSA roster, then I would be very hesitant. ?Being a Fall league, the "New" season would be in effect so she would not have to get a release from her summer team. ?But, if her Ice team is planning on participating in a Fall NSA tournament, then I would not sign a roster for the fall rec league. ?If her Ice team does not play in a fall tournament and your DD is on the Rec league NSA roster, then she would have to get a release when Spring ball comes around.

Really????

Ellet did not have a team last year due to the levy but will have a team this year. The season before there were girls on the team from the Lightning, Ice , Lasers, and more. Is it that they did not participate in the travel team during the school season?????

Obviously the Ice is our FIRST priority as her dad is the head coach, but I certainly did not know the school team would be an issue I just thought the league would be.

Thanks!

Basically, as I understand OHSAA rules:

If there are more than 3 players from the same school on a team, ANY PARTICIPATION (practice, games, workouts etc) is strictly limited to occur only between their last school game (be it regular or post season) and August 1.

We had to skip a tourney a few years ago, because Sunday was August 1 and we had more than 3 girls from the same school district.

The mitigating factor that I AM NOT CERTAIN about is the fact that she is not in High School, and the OHSAA is the High School governing body.

As far as playing on a rec team and a traveling team, I don't believe there is any problem beyond the coaches being upset about potential conflicts.

SR1972, I left out an important few words that I have now edited in to my post. The important thing is "during the scholastic season". Sorry.

Fall ball will have no effect on the scholastic ball eligibility. The NSA roster worries me though.

OHSAA, applies only to high school is not a correct statement. It also applies to 7'th and 8'th graders. If you read the bylaws it has many rules that apply to non high school or 7'th and 8'th graders. Even 6'th graders in some cases have rules..

Interesting point that OHSAA also governs athletics not at the HS level. I did not know that, so I apologize for the mis-statement. I thought the only thing they goverened about lower grades was the regualtions that 7th and 8th graders can't participate in HS Sports.

So how do you think OHSAA will address the use of Metal Cleats in softball in 2008? Will they also allow them in in the lower grades?

My answer for what it's worth is yes. Reason is we play by the same rules and governing body.NHFS.. What is more interesting is most , Rec leagues play by high school rules. Do we let a 10 year old wear metal spikes. Some of the boards that govern rec play are going to be having fun with this one. If a kid plays both ASA and high school ,two pair of shoes. I can see it now, coach I have the wrong pair of shoes. An 8'th grader can play in high school sports, it depends on birthday.

Alot of other school districts in Ohio play middle school ball in the spring (the same time is high school), but in the Akron School district Middle School ball is played in the fall. So playing on any other team (rec or tournement ball) during this time creates an eligability problem for your school team.

We hear the argument to move softball to the fall as a fall sport in High School. I think you bring up another good reason it won't happen. Plus soccer in the small schools would take many girls away from softball that play both sports.

That is another whole ball of worms. ?Nearly every varsity coach wants the athlete to speciaize in THEIR sport.
Move Softball to the fall and it conflicts with volleyball and Tennis, soccer in the spring conflicts with track.
Not to mention that when you aren't playing in school the coach EXPECTS you to be playing AAU, JO, Fall Ball, you name it as long as its THEIR sport. ?It is very difficult to be a multi-sport athlete today.

Many coaches are taking this "my sport only" mentality to the 12 year old level as well. ?Year round soccer, year round basketball, year round softball. ?How can an athlete know what they might excel in if they never get a chance to participate. ?Play nothing but soccer until you're a freshman in HS, good luck catching up in softball, volleyball or basketball....

Have the coach call Clark Richards (Ohio Ice 14U) or Mr. Newsome (Ohio Ice 15U)(these two just because I know them from our age group). ?They have both been thru this and can give you some good advice. ?I do not have thier phone number but I'll bet that the coach has them.

If you have questions, I'll bet there are other girls/parents on the team that have the same concerns.

Your AD and ?your High School coach in your school district should have the current rules. Since I have done both , I have found out many traveling team coaches are not up to date with the latest changes and that can get you in trouble.

I agree with SBFAMILY, talk to your AD and Principal. ?

OHSAA rules are alot like softball rules, they are open to different interpretations. ?What one person on here may think, may not be the way your school district will interpret it. ?The school administration has the final say, so they should be the only ones you should be asking questions. ?Coming from a travel coach as well as a HS coach. ?Good Luck.

A junior high player is only govern by OHSAA if she participates in a school that is offering a OHSAA sanctioned team at the junior high level.
Up to 4 high school players can play on the same fall ball team. While there is controversy covering if this covers incoming freshmen, I do have an e-mail from OHSAA that says it does.... Reading the OhSAA regulations states that a girl is not a member of a high school team until she participates in a scrimmage or game.
