What's the Rule?

We started our game last night and played one inning before there was a heavy downpour. Ump called the game at that point. He then went over to both coaches and told them, that when it is rescheduled the game will be picked up from that point -- Bottom of the 1st, 2outs, score 3-1.

I thought that if the game did not reach the minimum innings (3 1/2 if home team is winning, 4 if visiting team is winning), then the game was a "rainout" and would/should start from scratch as if the game had been rained out.

Is this a different rule for high school?

Going straight from the high school rule book, there are no suspended games (ones where you pick up where you left off) in high school softball. If a game is not complete (which is before five innings in a seven inning game, or after 4 1/2 if the home team is ahead when the game is called) when interupted by weather or darkness, the the game is called a "no game"- the whole thing is wiped out.

But there is a possible exception to that rule.

The high school rules also note that any state may adopt their own game-ending procedures, such as the numer of innings to make a game "official", dealing with tie games and they may even allow suspended games.

Since I don't do high school softball, just baseball, it is entirely possible that Ohio has adopted suspended games. I would have to double check on that, or maybe one of the high school guys can post it here.

Didn't Davidson and someone (Marysville?) go and do a second day from where they left off a few years back that went something like 17-20 innings in the tournament?

1.4) Interrupted Games

1.41) A game called for any reason, where a winner cannot be determined (NF 4 2-3), or any game called at any time for mechanical failure (artificial lights, water systems, etc.) will be treated as a suspended game. If the game is to be completed, it will be continued from the point of suspension, with the lineup and batting order of each team exactly the same as the lineup and batting order at the moment of suspension subject to the rules of the game. Such game will be completed unless both coaches agree not to do so.
1.42) When the visiting team has scored one or more runs to tie the score or to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead, the game shall be suspended when the following circumstances prevail:

1) The game has gone five innings and

2) The game is called while an inning is in progress but before it is completed.

1.43) There cannot be a tie game. Games are won, lost or suspended.
1.5) Any suspended OHSAA tournament game shall be continued from the point of suspension at a later time. All OHSAA tournament games shall be played to completion.

Game resumes where there was the stoppage of play. Have only had this happen one other time in one of our HS games.

Okay, I checked... :) (and see that others beat me to it while I was looking it up!)

By state adoption, OHSAA regulations do allow suspended games. If a game is ended at any point (even before it becomes an official game, which is after five full innings or 4 1/2 if teh home team is ahead), due to any reason (weather, darkness, light system failure, etc.) it becomes a suspended game.

After the fifth inning, the game is suspended only if the visiting team is ahead, or the game is tied, and the home team has not completed its at-bat.

In tournament play, any suspended game will be played to the full seven inning completion, regardless of which team is ahead or behind when the game is suspended (10 run rule does still apply).

This is pretty much identical to what the OHSAA uses for high school baseball, but that is completely different than the rule for Major League baseball.
