When is it time?

Ok for all you coaches out there. At what point do you think it is time to fold the team (due to lack of girls) and let the girls look for other teams. Our team has had poor attendance at our tryouts and I am beginning to get worried about leaving my dd with this team. She is determined to stay with this org because she loves it (we are all happy) but things aren't looking good. As of right now we only have 3-4 girls including my dd. We have been offered 2 other positions one of which I hate to see us miss out on by waiting to see IF we can get a team together. So what are the chances of pulling together that many more girls after this week. It is almost labor day and fall ball and fall tournaments are going to be starting soon. So what are some opinions is it too early for me to bail out?

Let me ask you a few questions before I answer. What age level? How many tryouts has your team had? How was the attendance? Do you have any more tryouts scheduled? I know the rain last Sunday put a cramp in my orgs plans. We're hoping to complete things this week.

If you like the team and the coaching staff ("we are all happy"), you have to see it through. Those offers won't dry up if they really want your dd. Talk to the other organizations and tell them what you're thinking. They will understand and if they don't, that should tell you something. JMHO

The "coaches looking for players" board is full all year. You won't have a problem even if you wait a few months.

It will be very difficult at this point to pick up that many quality players. (with only a 3-4 player base)
If you are thinking that another team is a good fit, and they have made an offer, I would seriously consider it.

Speaking on this subject, does it seem like there are more teams this year than ever. It seem everbody and their brother and their brother's mailman is starting a new team. Are any of the "established teams" keeping a couple of roster spots open for when these teams fold.

That's the problem, too many teams and not enough players. ?We live in a small, rural area where there are a handful of small, newer organizations and 1 really big, reputable organization. ?Its nearly impossible for the smaller organizations to compete with the Big Org! ?They have the name, reputation, and have proven that they probably aren't going anywhere. ?Even if the new orgs have fabulous coaches and all the ingredients of a power-house team(s), they can't promise "next year", atleast not at first. ?That just comes with being around a while. ?The name & reputation of an established organization far exceeds the potential success of a new one, in my opinion.

12U. 2 tryouts only one more scheduled. Attendance was between 2 days a total of 3 girls not already with the org. One of those 3 has definitely gone with another team. This is a well established team I am not understanding what is going on. We personally are going to see what happens at the next tryout. I believe if it still looks this bad then we are going to take another offer. The other team is being great. We explained our situation and the coaches actually encourage you to "shop" around before making a commitment to his org. I guess I just feel that with all the talk about jumping ship for greener grass that we will be looked down upon for going with another team. I want to be loyal and wait but I don't want to end up looking for a team and not finding one that is the right fit. This one other team I believe would be the best for my dd. Coaches are very knowledgable and kind. Not to bring up the old subject of shortage of players discussion but we had this problem last year we had 10 all winter then one lost interest and quit so we played 90% of our season with 9. I just don't want us to find 7 and not be able to pick up the rest then us be one hunting for a team all winter.

Oh you want to start that one again . I am beginnning to think that I need to start drinking just to get through tryout season. This is so stressful. I thought that we had it all figured out and set with a great established org and now this.-ugh!

Just a thought....perhaps there are other teams with 4-5 players as well.....maybe combine the two to keep the team together?

Nice thought but most teams around here and there are quite a few (there are 7 within a 2 county radius that I can think of off the top of my head-not to mention the border state teams) and they all seem to be pretty set with a good solid number of girls. So if I bail this weekend do most think I am giving up too soon? I have pretty much made up my mind (which is know to change with the wind) that if the turnout is the same this next tryout that we will accept another offer.

dont fret, if nothing comes along, you can always "free agent" yourself...watch, come winter, that "Coaches Need Players" thread will be a wish list when kids change their minds, bolt, change sports or simply quit
