when opportunity knocks

I came across this article on Kelli Suguro, a starter for the Washington Huskies Softball team. How she got to where she is now is a combination of determination and luck, and a story about a softball player who insisted of going to the college of her dreams, even if it meant playing co-ed intramural softball as a freshman.

I know Kelli a little bit and her dad, David, pretty well. Great people. David is about the nicest guy in the world. I remember during Kelli's high school days David telling me she was interested in UW, but there wasn't much interest from them or hardly any other Div. I programs. I can still see David telling me this at the fields in Kent, WA, and just kind of giving that disappointed half-smile.

Kelli played for the Washington Sidewinders (now NW Sidewinders) and was always on their top team. I certainly offered for her to come play for me at Div. III Whitworth, but I knew I didn't have much of a shot. She was pretty much focused on UW, as are most girls in that state. She was always an excellent player and extremely athletic, so I'm not sure why she didn't draw more interest. She probably didn't write to many schools since she was focused on UW, but I don't know for sure.

In any event, I can say that this is an even better story when you know how good of a family the Suguros are.
